Not happy. Again, what did he ever do as a scout here to distinguish himself? I believe his tenure was the Hatley era and the first year of the Angelo era, our drafts during that time were pretty damn bad, no?

I'll give it a chance, he's got a franchise QB, so he needs to find some weapons around him and start replacing the aging defense. Let's see if he can manage that.

He was here for 6 years, not sure which ones those are, but from 1998 to 2003 they drafted some good to great players (Urlacher, Colvin, Kreutz, Holdman, Booker, Tucker, Brown and Brown, Parrish, Tillman, Briggs, I'd argue that Colombo and Grossman weren't terrible picks either, despite how they turned out). They were probably the most vital string of drafts for building what became the incredibly talented mid 2000's teams. Not hands down amazing, but for the Bears, pretty good.

he's got a pimp qb, he's got a pretty versatile running back coming off a pro-bowl, he's got a line that needs a little tweaking but with some very good pieces. he needs to get a receiver and then re-stock the defense.

The thing is it shouldn't take much to make the current squad a contender, but this guy, and Ruskell, do not appear capable of steering this ship over the next 5 years. That restocking of the defense is going to be a huge endeavor. And the "tweaking" of the line is going to be a job that is never done - not to mention they need to do more than tweak.

Another issue I have with this hire, is, he's only been in the scouting(personal) game since 1998. He wasn't doing anything football related before then? Why? I only bring it up because he's kind of old, and one of the knocks on the younger guys like Raye and Ross is expereince, well crap, they almost have as much experience as this guy.

He was a strength and conditioning coach/coordinator for several years and had experience as a position coach in the 80's. He's a football lifer.

As I understand he was just a general S&C coach for the Navy

Emery was director of strength and conditioning services as well as an associate professor at the U.S. Naval Academy from 1991-98. He was responsible for the development, administration and supervision of all strength and conditioning activities for 4,000 Midshipmen.

That seems to have little to do with football.

A 31-year football veteran, Phil Emery enters his 14th NFL campaign and his third as the Chiefs Director of College Scouting. He previously served in the same capacity for Atlanta from 2004-08 before working as a regional scout for Atlanta leading up to the 2009 draft. Emery was an area scout for Chicago (’98-04).

The Garden City, Michigan native served as the Director of Strength and Conditioning Services and as an Associate Professor at the U.S. Naval Academy from ’91-98. In ’96, his program helped the football team to its first winning season in 15 years.

Emery joined the Naval Academy after serving as the assistant strength and conditioning coach at Tennessee (’87-91). That's still not an impressive resume. Guys like Ross and Raye have much more NFL related accomplishments in a shorter period of time. This hire sucks. There I said it.

so Atlanta demoted him, basically, before he left.

I never said he had a great resume, just that he's clearly been involved with football related work his entire adult life.

From the Tribune's "hey this is going to be the guy they hire" article:

Emery showed what a team player he was in 2008 when Thomas Dimitroff was hired as Falcons general manager. Dimitroff wanted to have someone he knew and trusted as his college scouting director, so he demoted Emery to regional scout.

"He took it very well," Dimitroff said. "He is an upstanding guy through and through. He's tremendously loyal and a morally ethical guy. … When my best friend (Pioli) needed a director, the first person I called about to recommend was Phil. I think a great deal of Phil."

Said Pioli, "He's an incredible husband and father. I respect him for the man he is. He's a great man."

Emery also is an exceptional communicator and teacher, according to those who know him.

"He's a good talker, but he's an even better listener," Pioli said. "In that general manager's role, it's very important to be a good listener."

Yep. I read an article that tried to spin it in a good way, but it's a demotion.

I don't know man. I try to stay positive with this stuff, but it's hard.

lol, that's quite the endorsement from Pioli.

For whatever it's worth, there's a bit of skepticism about the Chiefs' drafts since Pioli/Emery took over. The draft before they arrived was tremendous(Dorsey, Albert, Flowers, Charles, Carr), their first draft was awful(Jackson was a big bust in the 1st, and the 7th round kicker is the only other remaining contributor). The last two years have fallen in between thus far, as far as you can tell this early into the players' careers.

Like I said, weeks ago, Ted Phillips is not qualified to make this hire. Really? This was the best he could do?

Yes, when I look at qualifications for a potential GM, being a good family man is at the top of the list.

Not official yet per the Bears

skjensen Sean Jensen

Indications are Phil Emery of the Chiefs will get a second interview and so will Jason Licht of the Patriots. Raye, Ross & Ruskell out.

That's stunning that Ross didn't make it to a second interview.

Maybe he bailed once he realized the amount of stupid they had going on there.

No, he was informed he wouldn't be invited back for another interview. He also didn't get a 2nd interview with the Colts, FWIW.
