Just curious about something that's only loosely related. These guys can get cortisone shots from their doctor, or no? Or is even local injections for injuries banned?

I'm suffering from tendonitis of the right shoulder and I am on a 10 day prednisone treatment. Am I out of luck? I mean is that gonna ban me from baseballz?

:bye:

Not sure if you're serious or not, but I'll answer since nobody else did. Prednisone is an anti-inflammatory steroid that slightly suppresses your immune system and cortisone works in a similar manner and neither jacks up your testosterone level. The crap Braun is accused of taking is an anabolic steroid, which does jack up the testosterone level, either directly by what's taken or by taking a precursor that turns into testosterone.

It's funny you mention that because I was just prescribed prednisone today as well and made the PED comment to a buddy.

Jeff Passan chimed in on Braun

Here’s the problem with Ryan Braun’s camp mounting a full-bore, no-holds-barred, spin-it-like-a-tornado excusefest ...

Despite the Braun camp’s protestations otherwise, one source familiar with the case said the facts lean heavily toward such shaming of the National League MVP – and that the substance for which Braun tested positive is not, contrary to the thrust of his defense’s claim, “highly unusual.”

Leak, leak, leak, went Braun’s people, to FoxSports.com and the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel and the New York Daily News...

Daily News report, which dropped a bombshell – Braun’s testosterone ratio allegedly was twice as high as any ever taken – but later said Braun did not expect to include that in his defense. Just that it was odd.

“People say a lot of things,” said the source familiar with the case. “If this was unlike any other case ever and was so screwed up, do you think it would go to arbitration?”

...Part of its joint drug agreement with the players’ union calls for a meeting after the confirmation of a positive from the second sample. If both parties agree there is no reason to proceed... they can overturn the suspension.

MLB didn’t.

Ryan Braun went on the offensive to save his reputation.

...the best he can hope for is that MLB sentences him under the previous collective-bargaining agreement. Because in the new CBA, a source said, the drug for which a player tested positive is revealed along with his suspension.

Victor Conte, who knows a thing or two about these matters, thinks Braun may just have the latest and greatest PED, which could disappear quickly.

It would be interesting because we've heard that testers are almost always a step behind those who make the drugs and if Conte's belief is true this would be further proof of that.

I also found it really funny that when typing in herpes, Google was certain I was trying for Herman Cain.

According to this, it's very unlikely that Braun's appeal is upheld:

An MLB official told me there are only two ways for Braun to win his appeal: Prove there was a lab error with the testing or say the Brewers signed off on the treatment.

I was told to forget proving a lab error because the system is designed to prevent such an occurrence. Each player's urine sample is divided into two samples. The first is tested and if it's positive for any banned substance, the second sample is put through a more rigorous, comprehensive testing regimen to assure the result is valid.

The MLB official also told me that the Brewers did not sign off on whatever substance Braun took. So, it's unlikely that excuse would be used during the appeal process.

so how bad will the Brewers be the first two months? is their pitching good enough to carry them?

I guess it depends on what the schedule looks like and what moves are yet to happen. The rest of the NL Central isn't shaping up to be much either. The Reds look like the runaway favorite, but then again they have Dusty to contend with.

Yeah it will probably come down to the Brewers and Reds. Signing Aramis, depending on how he starts the season, might be the move that keeps the Brewers in the race until Braun comes back. Don't count out the deadbirds though. With Wainwright coming back, while it won't make up for losing Pujols, it could put them in the 85 win range.

I think that the Cards will be squarely in it. A top three of Wainwright, Carpenter and Garcia and a Beltran/Holliday/Berkman middle of the order will keep them in the race, I think.

Of course a couple of perfectly plausible breaks go bad and they're a 75 win team. And I'm still not sold on their pen.

And I agree about the Aramis signing, and I think Braun's test might have been the motivation to make the final push to sign him. But Ramirez isn't worry free, either.

yeah i definitely wouldn't write off the cards. if berkman has another strong year then they're really just downgrading from pujols to beltran, and last year (based on fangraphs' metrics) pujols and beltran were separated by only half a win. now that's in a down year from pujols and a nice bounce back from beltran, but i'd only expect about a three win difference between the two players. they replace the mediocrity of mcclellan and edwin jackson with wainwright (who presumably won't be at his best, but bad for wainwright is probably still better than those two) and won't be wasting time with theriot's lousy defense. i'd actually rate the cards as favorites to win the division.

Sources tell The Sporting News that MLB is unlikely to overturn Braun's suspension.

There were two ways he could appeal: The first would be to prove the lab made an error, but there are failsafes in place to catch errors, so the likelihood of that is extremely small. The second way he could have appealed would be to prove that the Brewers signed off on whatever it was he took, and the team had no idea he was taking the banned substance.
