If he took something by mistake he will still be suspended I believe. So that theory doesn't work.

Yeah, he basically has to prove that something was tainted... which can happen. Some guys on the Mexican national team got suspended at one point and were able to prove it was tainted beef at a restaurant.

But the most common defense is that an over the counter supplement had something in it that wasn't on the label... and that one has never worked for a player. The MLB has an approved supplements list for a reason.

That was 7 players from the Mexican National Team that allegedly ate chicken tainted with Clembuterol. They were all suspended from the Gold Cup pending their appeal. The WADA didn't ban them for the longer length of time because the poultry industry in Mexico is notorious for having issues with chicken.

That said, in that case, it's highly unlikely that those guys weren't doping. They happened to have their entire country being willing to take a hit on their behalf. That's not going to happen to Braun. Not only are MLB's rules far more strict in terms of appeal, but I doubt there's any realistic scenario where he wouldn't be held accountable for what goes into his body.

Basically, unless a hooker shot him up with steroids while he was unconscious, he's going to serve this suspension. Which sucks for baseball, the Brewers, and Braun.

I also don't buy that no one has ever won their appeal before. This story was leaked by ESPN and it was the NL MVP. If he would of won the appeal and ESPN didn't leak it no one would have known. Obviously MLB doesn't want people to know that their testing system has some flaws to it, because then everyone would assume everyone is juicing again because if there are flaws it can be beat. Again it's a real real long shot but just throwing it out there.

But it's not just about "juicing". The primary purpose of these steroids is for healing of tissue. However, they're banned non the less. I know Braun has a history of back problems and whatever it was he was suffering from last year. There was a lot of talk that he could be DLd but it never happened. I'm willing to bet that whatever tested positive for was so that he could play through it. It makes sense that The Brewers, knowing that it was likely Fielders last season with them weren't about to chance the season slipping away so the did what they had to do to keep Braun off the DL.

so you're saying the brewers gave braun steroids without him knowing about it? boy that sure as hell would be a scandal.

Something like that. More if a dont ask dont tell thing. They needed him to play through pain, and he was going to need something to get him through it or speed up the healing. He didn't ask what it was, they didn't tell him. I doubt that it wod mark the first time that's happened in pro sports. I believe that with steroids you only have to use it once and it can show up in your system for up to 6 months.

Are you just making [expletive] up?

Most synthetic testosterone is down to undetectable levels after 7-10 days.

With false neg/pos rates on elevated hormone tests, you'd need 7% synthetic hormone usage in MLB for real positives to outnumber false ones.

Not making stuff up, maybe I'm wrong.

so an mlb organization is knowingly injecting a blatantly illegal (both in respect to US laws and MLB rules) substance into its players that can heal them quickly short-term, but have significant negative health impacts in the long run. and they're doing this in a desperate win-now ploy because they're losing a franchise cornerstone in the offseason. and the player, who will have his reputation ruined and lose a lot of money due to suspension, is just a-ok with this.

If they legitimately felt that he wouldnt get caught, it's possible. I guess I just can't comprehend anyone knowingly using anything like that willfully after everything that happened with Bonds, McGwire, Sosa, Clemans et al. Maybe someone desperate to make a name for themself or get themselves a big contract or an older player looking to buy themselves a few more years but someone in their prime and as established as Braun who already has a lifetime contract.

so you can't comprehend a player juicing to improve his performance, but you can envision an mlb organization risking a federal investigation, severe mlb penalties and a massive lawsuit against them by one of their star players.

Probably PR, but via Brewerfan, according to Tom Haudricourt, those in Brauns camp are very confident that the suspension will be overturned and it was something that shouldn't have been leaked out.

This is what you do when you get caught red-handed and you have not one ounce of regret or class.

1) Deny everything.

2) Muddy the water as much as you can to try to create even the slightest, tiniest, fractional percent of doubt. Then leverage that doubt into something much bigger in the court of public opinion, where people are stupid and don't understand stuff.

those tests have mercury in them and you know that mercury can't be trusted.

Brewerfan.net was disappointing me with its rational take on this for the first hour or so after it broke, but once Braun super-duper-promised that he was innocent, it all fell apart.

My favorite so far.

I just got back from work and read this entire thread. Frankly, I'm upset to be associated with many of you! Within seconds of hearing the news come out, the majority of you were chastising him and passing judgment on information you did not know anything about. As stated earlier, if this story would not have been leaked to ESPN, and he is found innocent, then none of us would ever have known about this. I feel confident that Braun will win his appeal and everyone of you who threw stones at Braun tonight will have to answer to yourselves and seriously kick yourselves in the behind.

How dare you! Wait till the facts come out.

In Braun I trust! When has he ever demonstrated a personality, physical structure, change in his game that warrants ANY of you to cast blame. He's been a model of consistency. PEDS result in changes in your production patterns.

I'm very very disappointed in many of you.

There's some gold over at Brewerfan

Braun has never looked like a guy who took steroids. This just makes no sense
I feel like I need to hold a candle light vigil for all of us Brewer fans....not kidding
1) Ryan Braun has not failed a PED test. Not until MLB releases a statement will it be official. Is Chris Paul a Laker?
I just can't believe Braun would knowing taking something that could get him banned. I'm sure he trusted a doctor to give him supplements within the MLB drug testing rules, and that doctor screwed up.

And no ELCABALLO, they don't have to take away ARod, Bonds or Pudge's MVP too. Those guys weren't caught using PED's with testing in place in the same season they won the MVP. It's pretty simple logic.
