This is the only scouting report I've seen so far on Castillo from a fan who went to go see his minor league team play:

Lendy Castillo was throwing harder (94-96 mph) than anyone from either team, and by A LOT. The ball coming out of his hand just looked different than everyone else.

This is all that I could find.

Benny Looper, the Phillies’ assistant general manager for player personnel, described 6-1, 170-pound Castillo as “wiry.” The Phillies have seen Castillo’s fastball reach 96 mph on the radar gun and “he’s got a good breaking pitch,” Looper said.

Feels like a right-handed Burke who is one level closer to the majors. He seems to likely have major league talent, but whether he's polished enough to possibly stick I don't know.

Fortunately, the bullpen as it stands now is pretty well equipped to handle a Rule 5 reliever. If Wood comes back that leaves Marmol, Marshall, Shark, Wood, and Russell as quality arms back there.

The only question I had about leaving Flaherty, and to a lesser extent, Gonzalez unprotected was whether or not Theo and Jed could find upper level 40 man guys that were better than those two. I think we've seen the last of Flaherty - Baltimore has openings in LF, 3rd, and to an extent, 2nd, meaning that Flaherty can probably stick as a utility guy. My guess is we've seen the last of Marwin - Boston is still rumored to want to deal Lowrie, and this provides them the flexibility to do that.

It's not a bad loss in terms of talent, but I do question who replaces them.

As for Castillo, eh. Sounds like Marcos Mateo to me, but younger, or a poor man's version of Alberto Cabrera. Mildly exciting.

Keeping Rhee was the most important thing to me, and he'll be around for now (a lot of offseason left).

Boston just sent Gonzalez to Colorado.

I'll get a laugh if they end up getting Ian Stewart for him.

They got another Rule 5 pitcher.

EDIT: Houston. I'm really, really bad at reading today.

Gonzalez goes to Houston. I think he'll get a shot at their starting shortstop gig. Good gamble on their part. I think he's a solid top 15 prospect for them right now.

Not sure why the Red Sox wanted Duarte. Doesn't seem all that interesting.

Glad the Cubs only lost Flaherty and Gonzalez. I'd rather keep Rhee.

I fully expect him to be compensation to Boston. Also, with Lawrie, Aviles, and Scotoru, unless one of them are traded the Red Sox have a full middle infield and I don't see Gonzalez taking one of their jobs but my bet is that we'll let them keep him anyway as part of the compensation.

This is moot now, since he was traded to Houston, but you can't do that without first letting every other team have a shot at him under the Rule 5 rules.

I've never figured out what the deal is with the AAA version of the draft.

Anyone eligible for Rule 5 who isn't on the 40 man, and isn't one of 38 guys protected beyond the 40 man can be taken for a small fee and only costs the $12,000 fee to draft him. There are no roster requirements on these guys for the drafting team(other than placing him on the 38 man AAA reserve list I assume?)

Considering you can protect up to 78 guys, and it's rare that somebody is protected when not eligible for rule 5, you're looking at guys outside the top 50 prospects of a team.

Pretty disappointed about Flaherty. I hope we end up snagging somebody worth while for 3rd, because I had him pegged as a possible platoon partner with Baker there if not.

I'm disappointed about losing Flaherty to a team that should be able to keep him. I couldn't care much less about Marwin Gonzalez. I am very excited about keeping Rhee.

New guy? Meh. We'll see what he looks like in ST.
