Big Ten floating 4 team playoff with 2 top seeds playing home games and a "neutral site" championship game.

Sources told the Tribune that a Big Ten plan would remove the top four teams from the BCS bowl pool and have semifinal games played on the college campus of the higher seed. That would do away with the facade of “neutral” sites such as New Orleans, Miami and Pasadena, Calif., and ease travel concern for fans.

The championship game then could be bid out, like the Super Bowl.

The concept of the Big Ten even entertaining playoff proposals seemed laughable as recently as two months ago. But in the wake of a low-rated BCS title game that satisfied few outside the Southeastern Conference footprint, the conference is ready to study and contribute ideas.

I'd prefer a larger playoff, but that's better than the current system.

I've wanted them to do this with 8 teams; home stadium games in the first round (a week after conference championships) with the first round losers still bowl eligible. Final Four round held on New Years Day (rotating the major bowls) with the title game on the 8th.

You'd need the Rose Bowl to relinquish its conference tie-ins, though

Didn't say I came up with it myself.

I can't remember the last time there were more than 4 teams with a legitimate argument for a title shot. Maybe 2007 when everyone was losing? That's about it.

2009 there were five undefeated teams.

2008 was the three-way Big 12 tie and there were seven one-loss teams in all plus undefeated Utah and Boise.

Those examples aside, I'm also more than fine with a four-team playoff and don't want any more than that.

Every year. It's a 12 game season.

There's never more than a handful of teams that should be in the championship game. 4 is plenty.

Same is true for college basketball, so let's just cancel the first two weekends.

Fine with me, I don't care about basketball. But comparing football and basketball is stupid. You can't play 2 games a week.

The point is that just because only a few teams can win each year doesn't make a larger field less entertaining

I've spent a decade texting the great senator Nancy Pelosi to get a 6 team playoff. 1 & 2 get a bye the first round, and all of the games can still be played at the stupid BCS dumps they play in now. Everybody wins a little.

The number 10 team in the BCS rankings was a hail mary away from probably being considered for the National Championship along with Oklahoma State and Alabama. 12 games in a 120 team league is not enough to make ironclad determinations between teams that are separated by 1 or even 2 losses in most cases. Obviously the nature of football works to limit a potential playoff field, and that's fine. But the notion that a playoff beyond 4 teams isn't exclusive enough is crazy.

I would agree the differences between teams end up being too small to be very accurate, but Wisconsin would not have been considered even without that Hail Mary. Their schedule wasn't good enough, and they probably wouldn't have even finished ahead of Stanford.

I'm a fan of a 4 team playoff. There won't be much chance of an undefeated being left out (unless the schedule is absolutely awful like Houston last year) but still makes a loss for any team potentially devastating. Any more than that and some teams will know they can lose a game and still make it.

Why is that a bad thing? The larger the playoff is, the more games those lesser teams have to win against strong competition. Would anyone really claim South Carolina/Wisconsin/Kansas State wouldn't be worthy if they had to beat Boise, then Stanford, then LSU to win a playoff?

I watch much, much more of the college football regular season than the regular season of any other sport. And a big part of that is that the drama factor is so high because a upset could end a teams season. If that was changed and a playoff was instituted, I would watch the playoff and enjoy it but still watch much less college football than I do currently. A large part of the regular season would become boring at least to me.
