You have to hope that Soriano doesn't decide to exercise his no-trade clause.

Where there's smoke there's fire and it seems Soriano could be on the move so I'd imagine this is the only thing that could prevent a possible deal, and if he does exercise it I'm going to track him down and kick him in the face with a golf shoe.

Ndamukong, is that you?

There's plenty of smoke without fire in hot stove talk. But maybe Theo pulled a reverse Schilling and spent his thanksgiving convincing Soriano to get the hell out of here. Something tells me he would not want to go to Oakland, and probably not San Diego either, for power sapping reasons. But would Washington be interested? They like big splashes and if they don't actually get Fielder they could be adding some real power for next to nothing at least.

There's also a chance he could talk to the guy he replaced last time and send Soriano to Baltimore, which likes to do stupid stuff and acquire big names well past their prime.

Hmmmmmm....... Soriano + Cash for Chris Tillman? Maybe try and finagle Josh Bell out of it too? Or is that dreaming too big?

Carroll's tweet sounded a lot more like speculation to me than a report.

Yea. Just basing it on what Rosenthal said and the DeJesus signing, I'm guessing.

I could see the Marlins being interested if they're looking to add some big recognizable names and the Cubs are willing to eat contract. They're reportedly exploring trading Logan Morrison for pitching. Soriano might be willing to wave his no-trade to take his talents to South Beach. Ozzie would convince himself he could turn him around. Edited by Elrhino

Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-times thinks the Cubs would be willing to eat more than half of Alfonso Soriano's remaining salary in a potential trade.

That's noble of them, but even if you cut the $54 million remaining on Soriano's deal in half, any team that gets him would still have to pay him an average of $9 million over the next three seasons. They'd also have to give up a prospect or two, though it surely wouldn't be anyone of major consequence in what would be a salary dump deal for the Cubs. If Soriano is dealt, the defensively-challenged outfielder would be a better fit as a DH with an American League club. Soriano does have a no-trade clause, but Wittenmyer says he's indicated a willingness to waive it.

Sorry, Soriano is at the point in his career where nobody is going to pay 9 mil/year for him as he continues to decline over the next 3 years. I'd be thrilled with a package similar to what we got for DeRosa and 10-15 mil, and even then we'd likely have to settle for either/or.

We'll be lucky to get Mike Fontenot even if we pay most of Soriano's salary. What is Soriano worth for 3 years? $10 million? That leaves $44 million for the Cubs to pay. The more I look at it the more I think we will have to add a productive player to any deal.

At that point, I'd rather just keep him. He's still got some value, and I think he can put up better numbers this year than he did last year.

I think some people are overstating just how "worthless" Soriano is. Sori is still a 1-2 WAR player (probably more if he goes to an AL team to DH and you factor out his defense) and according to Fangraphs, was worth 5.9 million last year. So it seems there would be at least a few teams willing to take him on if the Cubs eat 40-44MM.

why?

.266 BABIP compared to a career of .302.

Slap another 20 points onto BA, OBP and SLG with singles that get through and his slash line looks a lot better last year: 264/309/489.

I agree with you that as long as we have to pay him he's more valuable to us as a platoon guy than playing for someone else while we get nothing in return and put Lou Montanez in his spot. However, he's more likely to get worse than better and if we can get a few mil and a solid prospect or young player I'd do it.

#cubs are trying to interest #orioles in Alfonso Soriano as a LF/DH option. Strict salary dump, w/#cubs paying bulk of $54m he's owed.

If only MacPhail had stayed!

It's not a salary dump if you're not actually dumping any salary

It's a salary dump if you're sending more salary out than you'd be taking back. Unless the Cubs pick up all of his contract, It'd still be a salary dump. Not much of one, granted.

It would also depend on what their plans are to replace him. If both Soriano and Byrd are moved they're almost certainly going to have to trade for or sign another OF, in which case they could easily be paying more for that new OF AND Soriano than what they're paying now.

According to ESPN Chicago's Bruce Levine, the Cubs have spoken to eight AL teams about Alfonso Soriano.

Soriano is owed $54 million over the next three years, but the Cubs are telling teams that they are willing to eat half of that. The 35-year-old outfielder batted .244 with a .759 OPS in 2011. He's a better fit for an American League team than a National League team because he would be able to DH.

If Theo somehow got away with trading Soriano and only paying around half of his salary I'd take back most of the mean things I screamed at Wrigley Field as I passed it on the train today.

Why are you screaming at Wrigley? Theo works at Fenway.
