A few tweets regarding a new playoff format. With the Astros moving to the AL West in 2013 apparently they are going to add another wildcard team and have a 1 game playoff between the 2 wildcards.

Two wild card teams....also Selig says. #MLB

Selig says the new playoff round for wild cards will give division champs more of a reward than current system.

Selig on getting new playoff round in '12 but not definite ... Says 1-game playoff more likely than 2-of-3. "It'll be dramatic.''

I really, really like that idea.

It certainly makes winning a wildcard spot more of a toss-up and winning the division much more appealing I think I like it as well.

There will also apparently be Inter-league play on a daily basis.

"We'll have inter-league play every day,'' Selig said. "That's something I didn't like inititally ... but 15/15 will work.''

I don't understand what the 15/15 means.

15 teams in AL 15 teams in NL requires one IL matchup at all times, or else teams would have 3 straight off days while others play series.

So there will be more IL games in total or are they just spreading them out more? I'm not a fan of more IL play.

One-game playoffs are awesome, and now we are guaranteed two every year.

Plus, no more of the playoff races where both teams know they are getting in and don't care who wins the division.

Plus, the wild card will have to burn its best pitcher before the division series, placing even more value on winning the division.

I really don't.

Why? I'm not sure where I stand yet.

The possiblility of 3rd place teams and/or teams with the 5th best record in their league having a chance to win the world series.

To be replaced by wild card races where both teams know they are getting in and don't care who has the better record.

I eagerly await the one-game playoff to get into the one-game playoff.

Also, is there any announcement on just how the schedule will change (just how many IL, division, and outside of division games each team will have?)

Thats probably a legit downside. At least there is a downside to wining the wildcard as opposed to the division now.

I don't think that is how it will go down, at least until the final week or so. There's going to be much more emphasis on winning your division, and it's going to open up the WC to more teams, which won't give them a chance to coast. If one team is comfortable with it, they will set it up to throw their ace in that game.

I don't think it's a legit downside. We've already given the 4th best teams in the league equal footing with the best to win it, this set-up would give the best team a better chance of winning and make it harder for the lesser teams.

three years from now when the cubs win 101 games and finish in second to the 102-win reds and then lose the play-in game to the 86-win cardinals and i really do the heroin in my forehead thing and die, you guys won't think this is such a great system

If the Cubs start fielding 100 win teams I will feel great about their abilityt to maintain that success for multiple seasons.

i will feel great for like 20 seconds and then my brain will explode or whatever happens when you put too much heroin inside it

On the flip side of giving a spot to what could be the 5th best team in the league, you're also giving the 91 win Indians the advantage over the 102 win A's because they happen to be in the midwest. The A's get to play the 85 win Twins in a coin flip for the chance to go play the 95 win Yankees. Should've stayed in Philly, Athletics!

I like it but since the Stros are moving to the AL it kinda hurts the NL Central. The Stros were going to be brutal for a few years at least.
