MILWAUKEE -- Kerry Wood's return to the Chicago Cubs may be a mere formality at this point.

The 34-year-old reliever had a conversation with Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein at a Chicago pub last week to discuss his future with the team.

"Theo has met with him and I've begun to talk to Pat Rooney (Wood's agent)," Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer said. "So we are going to consider bringing him back. My view of him is he's a guy who brings toughness. He doesn't shy away from big moments and big games. I think that's something really important. Chicago is a big stage and it's a mistake to take that for granted. Not every guy comes in from the outside can necessarily handle it."

Ok, sign Wood, deal Marmol and insert Marshall as the closer? Of course, we may deal for a closer but I like the idea of Woody coming back.

What the [expletive] kind of meatball [expletive] is that, Hoyer? Don't dumb yourself down to Dave Kaplan for Christ's sake.

Until proven otherwise I'm assuming they all go back and giggle themselves to sleep after saying that [expletive].

I can live with that

Yeah. Just as one speaks in brief, direct phrases when conversing with a child, Theo and Jed must speak meatball in order to communicate with the Chicago sports media. Can you imagine if they attempted to explain player evaluation in terms of objective analytical metrics to Kaplan? He'd become confused and flustered, take off his suit coat and try to fight them.

He already had no idea wtf Theo was talking about the couple of times he has interviewed Theo.

That suit coat isn't coming off for anyone.

All but a formaility that Woody will be back. =D>

"I'll leave the details of the meeting confidential," Epstein said. "But I have no trouble going on the record saying that Kerry Wood is a very important part of the Chicago Cubs. We want him back. He makes us a better team because of what he brings to the bullpen. He also makes us a better organization

And based on Ricketts comments, he will be with the organization after he retires. Hello to the new pitching coach down the road.

Is that a good thing? I'm not so sure that it is. What would lead you to believe that he would make a good pitching coach? He often had trouble throwing strikes. He had trouble keeping his arm healthy. He had trouble preventing blisters. I don't think thay any of that necessarily disqualifies him from being a pitching coach but I don't see a whole lot that makes me jump up and down about the idea either.

He relied primarily on arm strnght and stuff, and that's not really something that can be taught. Kind of like having someone who relied primarily on strength and steroids to be your hitting coach.

Marmols certainly a trade candidate, but he's pretty much set, as is the rest of the pen.

Marmol

Marshall

Wood(probably)

Carpenter

Russell

Samardzjia(unless starting)

Dolis

Beliveau

Guzman (wherever he may be)

Mateo

Gaub

Stevens

Maine

Caridad

Cashner's also a possibility although I'd prefer he start, but if Marmol is traded, he could be a closer candidate.

No need to go after more relievers, especially considering all the holes we need to fill.

The BP should be a strong suit, no doubt.

Havent we proven that there is little correlation between how a player is during his playing days and the types of things they emphasize in a coaching role. I mean it's not like he would tell pitchers to not worry about being wild. I'm sure he knows that's bad, but he's struggled with control during his career for whatever reason. If a pitcher with good control starts working with him, I doubt they all the sudden change his arm angle and turn him into a wild pitcher.

All that said, there's little to no evidence that Wood would be a good pitching coach down the line. There's also not a lot of evidence that he would be necessarily bad either.

Sounds like Wood took Theo to Tripoli's. Pretty divey.

Cubs baseball president Theo Epstein confirmed Friday the process of re-signing Kerry Wood has begun.

Epstein met with Wood for a casual get-together last week on Wood's home turf in Lincoln Park. Wood made sure Epstein felt right at home, choosing a bar that caters to Boston sports fans.

"I'll leave the details confidential," Epstein said. "But Kerry Wood is a very important part of the Chicago Cubs and we want him back.

It's gotta be Tripoli's.
