Phillies To Sign Jonathan Papelbon

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [November 11, 2011 at 1:18pm CST]

The Phillies have agreed to sign Jonathan Papelbon, according to Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com (on Twitter). The agreement is pending a physical. The Phillies appeared to have a deal with Ryan Madson earlier this week, but talks fell through and the sides didn't complete the rumored four-year, $44MM deal.

Papelbon, 30, posted a 2.94 ERA with 12.2 K/9 and 1.4 BB/9 in 64 1/3 innings for the Red Sox in 2011, saving 31 games. He's a Type A free agent who will cost the Phillies their first round draft pick in 2012. Boston will obtain the 31st overall pick in next June's draft unless the Phillies sign an additional Type A free agent with a higher ranking than Papelbon. If the Phillies lose Madson to another team after offering him arbitration, they'll surrender one pick and gain two.

Have to love a relief pitcher having Type A status and not Aramis.

It gets better:

Per Jayson Stark: There is a vesting option (he does not specify what) that could bring the deal to $60 million.

Beautiful.

I love that this happened after they were so close to giving Madson that much too.

"Wait, you're saying I can pay a 31 year old reliever 12 million, AND give up my first round pick?"

Very odd situation. They may be losing their starting SS, need a new LF, and are in need of any kind of offense yet they're too busy setting the market for closers.

I'm guessing they're finally going to give Brown his chance in LF. I don't think they are going to have too much problem replacing the guys they lost in 2011, but it's the guys they are going to lose in 2012/2013 that are going to be an issue. They aren't going to be able to keep all of them, and they don't have many replacements for them waiting.

They would have been MUCH better off investing that money into Reyes.

Absolutely silly money for Papelbon. He's not even that good anymore.

Well that's just not true. But yeah, silly contract.

Wow. His stats are pretty good this past year. Maybe my view is skewed because he was on my fantasy team and sucked at the end of the year for me like all the Red Sox I had, causing me to blow a monster lead at the end.

Yeah, I thought the same until I looked at his stats.

you figure they'll likely get the pick back when somebody else signs Madson

but obviously the smart move was just installing Bastardo as closer instead of signing either

i'd say the cubs' chances of getting hamels next offseason just got a lot more realistic.

in 2013, the phils will have 92.5m tied up in halladay, lee, papelbon, howard, and utley. add hamels to that and you're talking about something like 110 million for 6 players. oh, and howard's salary jumps from 20m to 25 after 2013.

if howard and utley don't bounce back (and even if they do), how the hell are they going to score runs?

even if they trade halladay next offseason to clear up space for hamels, can they really afford to give another 100+ million dollar contract to a pitcher?
