Very odd situation. They may be losing their starting SS, need a new LF, and are in need of any kind of offense yet they're too busy setting the market for closers.

I'm guessing they're finally going to give Brown his chance in LF. I don't think they are going to have too much problem replacing the guys they lost in 2011, but it's the guys they are going to lose in 2012/2013 that are going to be an issue. They aren't going to be able to keep all of them, and they don't have many replacements for them waiting.

i agree that brown should be getting his chance. though im not quite sure that this signing makes a whole lot of sense. the phils are lacking offense, consistant offense. and obviously theres a window there as some of the guys are getting older. i'd have thought they'd look to upgrade the offense more than spend a ton on a closer.

when we faced them in the playoffs this past year, i can honestly say that noone in their lineup scared me. i felt that rollins was hot and was getting on a lot, but after rollins, you can get those guys out. the bottom of their lineup was just abysmal. so im not sure what their plan is, but whatever it is they are good at hiding it.

i'd say the cubs' chances of getting hamels next offseason just got a lot more realistic.

in 2013, the phils will have 92.5m tied up in halladay, lee, papelbon, howard, and utley. add hamels to that and you're talking about something like 110 million for 6 players. oh, and howard's salary jumps from 20m to 25 after 2013.

if howard and utley don't bounce back (and even if they do), how the hell are they going to score runs?

even if they trade halladay next offseason to clear up space for hamels, can they really afford to give another 100+ million dollar contract to a pitcher?

I think they'll end up signing Hamels. It doesn't fit with their MO of the last few years to not sign him. How they'll fit in the rest of the roster, I have no idea.

Marmol for Dominick Brown?

Marmol for Dominick Brown?

I'd trade Marmol for anything remotely good, so yes.

Maybe the Angels sign Pujols/Fielder and we can send Marmol there for Morales.

I cant see them trading Brown unless wowed, but assuming they plan on going forword with an outfield of Brown, Victorino, and Pence, I'd be interested to see if theyd be willing to move Mayberry for cheap. Maybe he just had a good year, or maybe hes a late bloomer. I wouldnt mind him as a platoon mate for Colvin if nothing else until something better comes along. I'm talking cheap, someone like Blake DeWitt or Jay Jackson and a minor league reliever.

I'd like to know if morales can walk without the assistance of crutches before making that deal.

I rather trade Marmol for Bourjos instead of Morales if we're trading with the Angels. Mainly cuz I want NOTHING to do with Morales.

Marmol can bring us more in value than a guy who has missed the last 2 seasons due to injury and will be a huge question mark. I'm not saying he'll bring us a top 10 prospect or anything, but we can do better than Kendrys Morales.

yeah i tend to agree. amaro just seems like the kid who gets money for his birthday and blows it all on an xbox and bluray player and new guitar, without considering that he'll reach driving age next year and might want to buy a car. i'm sure this idiotic spending will catch up to him eventually, but i don't think next offseason will be the time.

Morales Career: .284 .336 .502 .838

And those numbers are pushed down a bit by his first season: .213 .273 .393 .666

If he's healthy, you could do a whole lot worse than that for Marmol. Not that this is really a possibility or anything, but it wouldn't be a bad move.
