I think it's also telling that just last week, Cespedes was able to openly say that the Cubs had been his most ardent suitor. Assuming that wasn't just posturing, it sounds like the Marlins haven't been trying as hard, which is curious considering the GM's quote. Maybe Theo and Jed are just better at this sort of thing? I guess the question is, what is a substantial offer for a guy like Cespedes? If its something insane like 8/100, then let them have him. Then again, they could be peacocking in hopes of scaring off other teams and end up offering him a more realistic offer. We should offer something. We should still offer something like 6-7 years at 7-8 mil/ year, which is somewhat risky when we're essentially giving a prospect a big league deal, but not enough so that it would be a major blow if he's a bust.

Word on twitter is that Cespedes doesn't really want to play in Miami. If true, and we make a competitive offer, I think he's ours to lose

I guess the key question is whose twitter?

DKnobler? Don't know who he is offhand but he was retweeted by Jon Heyman so I'd guess he's a legit source

Teams are waiting for the OK to start bidding on Cespedes. There's still a feeling that Cespedes really doesn't want to go to Marlins.

Heyman also said, he may want to play for the Marlins, or he may not. Depending.

Also on Cespedes: He has told teams he would prefer not to play in Miami. If so, he has interesting decision if Marlins still bid big.

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic -- The agent for Yoenis Cespedes says the Cuban outfielder has established legal residency in the Dominican Republic, the final hurdle to becoming a free agent.

Edgar Mercedes confirmed the residency in a telephone interview Tuesday.

Once Major League Baseball receives proof of Cespedes' residency, it will send a letter to all clubs verifying his status as a free agent.

Knobler's with CBS, I believe. He's broken a few things this offseason, can't remember what though. Is there a Vegas Line for amount of his contract anywhere? By the way, it looks like they've jumped the gun on him being eligible to sign already. Haven't seen those reports crop up today, at least. Most of what I read said it'd be 2 weeks from when he gained residency, so I'm guessing he's signed by someoen right in time for spring training.

The two weeks thing was the generally accepted rule, but Concepcion was cleared something like two hours after being granted residency. Cespedes may already be a FA.

I remember this guy was calling some of the draft signings before the deadline. No clue how legit he is outside of that or if this is his opinion....but in regards to the 3 Cubans:
Cubs/Cuba

Sounds like all three might sign. The trifecta.

This was a few days ago btw.

I'd probably have to stop wearing pants.

Apparently, he also posted they had a deal in place with Soler a couple weeks ago.

Cubs already have deal in place for Soler

Heard this today. Happy New Years

So he's like a Cubs version of Scott Swaim.

Here's some evidence that he was given some sort of credibility regarding Cubs draft pick signings

Per BCBer Joeby231, the Cubs have agreed to terms with 41st rounder Austin Urban, and that agreements with Dillon Maples (14th round) and Shawon Dunston Jr. (11th round) will be announced this week sometime. Hopefully he's right. Also, several places are showing that a deal has been agreed to with 2nd round Dan Vogelbach, but Selig is sitting on it, much to the chagrin of everyone.

From PSD... not sure if this guy has any info or what, but he talks like he sorta does.

Wasn't the plan pre CBA announcement however with this being last season of 'free spending' IFA, all three are definitely high priority guys right now- but it doesn't end there- 2-4 other IFA's they covet as well

"All three" being the Cubans, of course.

Can't wait until dumbass Cubs fans are "welcoming" him with stupid Fidel/Che hats and and fake beards and fake cigars.

I recommend taking a look at that thread at about the point of the link I posted.

Still not sure who this guy is, but they all believe him and he consistently talks like he knows someone/something.

Oneri has a solid group that's all over these guys- the amount of time and scouting dollar spent on them is substantially more than the Cubs have spent on an IFA group before. As far as priority goes, there doesn't seem to be any one head and shoulders above anyone else...

As far as my preference- Solar has big time tools however Cespedes has better feel to his game... Flip a coin- both flawed, both potentially impact types...

ABTY7 does have some insider cred. Or did, at least. From what I understand, he was working for the Cubs until recently... I think security or something. He wasn't in on any discussions, but he spent a lot of time talking to people who were.
