Often the final interview will be with the folks on the team--even if it is a manager being hired. Often, those teams ask the best questions.

Alomar was a candidate for the White Sox vacancy that went to Robin Ventura and he is lauded for his tremendous knowledge of the game after a standout career as a catcher for multiple teams. He is considered by many observers to be one of the top candidates ready to make the move into a manager's seat and is also a candidate for the managerial job with the Boston Red Sox.

 

In addition, it appears that the Cubs will also talk with Boston Red Sox coach DeMarlo Hale, who is a Chicago native and is very well respected by Epstein.

I can't make claims on how common it is. However, they most certainly do something similar to this where I work. They also weed out the weaklings during the training process.
