"We wouldn't rule anything out, but given his position as the top third baseman, it seems likely that another team will offer him a contract he finds suitable and we'll be looking for a new solution at third ... reading the tea leaves it looks like he'll be gone."

Ramirez is gone.

lost the signal just as Bruce Miles was asking a question related to Zambrano

It was Aramis, not Zambrano.

Theo basically said he'd like to have him back but wont be offering him the sort of contract he's likely to get elsewhere.

Yeah, I don't know why I typed Zambrano but I realized it just as I sent it, then edited.

Presser is over. Highlights:

Aramis is almost certainly gone.

Quade is likely gone, final decision within the week.

Carlos Zambrano decision is more uncertain, Theo wants to talk to Z first.

Have until the end of the day today to finish compensation with Red Sox. If not finished, Selig can take over the process or extend the deadline.]

Oh, and that racist shitbrick Kaplan was grinning ear to ear when talking about Aramis being gone.

Yeah, it definitely sounded like Quade's out. On the other hand, I think there's a strong possibility that Zambrano stays.

This offseason is going to be so much fun.

He's either got a good chance of staying, or Epstein is doing a very good job bluffing it in order to keep his trade value reasonable.

Either way, I like it.

That's exactly what it is. I'd be absolutely stunned if Zambrano played another game in a Cubs uniform.

I can't see Epstein and Hoyer railroading him out of town for nothing. If they don't get the cash or prospects to make it worth while, he'll be back. I really can't imagine a new regime stepping in and their first big move is giving away a productive 18 million dollar pitcher for nothing.

Love the Zambrano response. Hate the Aramis response.

Perfectly reasoned, however.

I would not be so sure, and I don't know why anybody would be stunned. He's under contract to pitch for the Cubs. He's capable of pitching well. The Cubs are in desperate need of starting pitching. There's a fairly simple scenario for seeing him pitch for the Cubs.

He didn't molest a Ricketts kid or anything.

If you ask Todd Hollandsworth, he sure did.

He left his teammates high and dry or something. FFS. Ugh.

I guess...I have my doubts about our ability to replicate his production.

I'm speaking more to the fact that some other team is going to offer him a longer term deal than it would be smart to, especially for us.

I think we can come close-ish on the cheap. Ramirez basically a 3-WAR player at this point in his career. I think we can easily put together a 1.5-WAR platoon and spend the $13-15 million we save on something else.

Platoons usually have a way of not working out in our favor. I also happen to think the fact that we're a major market team should mean we should strive for better than "close-ish"

Maybe I'm remembering incorrectly, but wasn't he suspended almost immediately? Like before he even had a chance to quit pouting, clear his head, think about it and come back.

Either way, TH is a knucklehead.

Do you think it would've been smart for us to give Aramis something like, just ballparking here, 4/52-56?

bpWAR isn't even that kind to him, listing him at 2.35 this year. The Cubs FO can likely spend that money more effectively elsewhere, like on the rotation or on 1B/OF.
