From a Padres Blog:

A little off topic, but I also wonder aloud if the Padres would work out a trade with the Cubs. They could sweeten the compensation the Padres will be receiving for Hoyer and Jason McLeod leaving. I have done previous pieces profiling specific players, and thought Brett Jackson would fit well in PETCO Park with his five-tool ability. Instead of one or two fringe prospects, the Padres could include Headley for Jackson

LEAVE BRETT JACKSON ALONE

I'm not that interested in Headley. He is a little bit better outside of Petco, but his road .805 OPS is inflated by a .374 babip.

The Song is about getting it done one day. This is hardly a somber song. In fact, it's uplifting. And so is the front office we now have in place!

It has a somber tone, feel. I listen to the flow of the music as much if not more than words. Unless you speak specifically some people around here seem to enjoy in just picking apart every little thing you say, like they get off on it. Not talking about you though.

You essentially told anybody who thinks the song is depressing and crappy that they're a pessimist. Of course I'm going to pick that apart.

It might be my bias since he played at Tennessee, but I've been intrigued with Headley for a while. I've been waiting for him to develop some more power, which he still hasn't, but the OBP might be coming around (his two highest OBPs came in two of the past three seasons) and his IsoD improved last year. I also like that Hoyer was talking about building around him in San Diego, though that could be more because he's cheap and offers some upside rather and the Padres need cheap production.

I wouldn't target him as a cornerstone or long term solution and I certainly wouldn't even consider Brett Jackson for him, but he'd interest me as a cheap bridge to Vitters/Flaherty/Lake/whoever becoming ready to take over third.

Anyone know what time the press conference is Monday?

Is it even going to be Monday, I had heard some people speculating it could be tuesday.

A little more from Rogers on Hoyer...

Cubs Chairman Tom Ricketts has a strong relationship with Padres owner Jeff Moorad, which helped him arrange the hiring of Jed Hoyer and Jason McLeod for Theo Epstein. He was in San Diego for the Cubs' season-ending series and stayed over for informal talks with Moorad and possibly Hoyer and McLeod. …

Hoyer, who reportedly was about to close on a house in San Diego, was blown away by the parameters of a five-year offer, which Moorad declined to match. He had decided he wanted to promote Hoyer's assistant, Josh Byrnes, with whom he had worked previously in Arizona. …

The Padres' farm system that Hoyer and McLeod put together is excellent, according to scouts. It will be interesting to see if the Cubs cherry-pick prospects from the Red Sox and Padres systems in the Rule 5 draft and as minor-league free agents. …

Well, the Score said 1:30. Shocking that they'd report something wrong.

I wonder if CSN will broadcast this like they did the Epstein press conference, it's nice to be able to watch it online.

I'm sure they will. They've got nothing better to show at 3pm on a weekday.

Interesting quote from McLeod re the Cubs system.

http://insidethepadres.blogspot.com/2011/10/q-jason-mcleod.html

Q. What do you know about the Cubs farm system?

A. From afar, it doesn't look like they have a depth of talent, although they did spend a lot in the draft this year, and I know they've got some high-ceiling guys with some risk. It SOUNDS like it's a little more middle of the road system. Certainly there will be players who are in the big leagues in the near future who do well. (Brett) Jackson. (Trey) McNutt. Junior Lake is playing well in the Fall League.

Ouch. Doesn't sound like he was that impressed with the draft, other than the amount spent.
