Not FA news, but certainly miscellaneous: The Astros are moving Brett Myers to closer.

Hasn't he been pretty good for them as a starter? Or did he just have a few good starts? I can't remember. Either way I find it hard to believe that the Astros have 5 guys who are better than him to take a starting spot away.

Strange move for a team with minimal assets and needs just about everywhere. Myers was one of the few Astros with some decent degree of trade value, especially considering how many teams are reportedly looking for rotation upgrades.

So I went back because I thought I remembered Brett Myers doing well too. Turns out he just threw alot of innings for them. If the idea is to open the rotation to young guys then more power to them. In fact, good move on their part.

Also random...JA Happ is going to be entering his age 29 season. He's older than Cole Hamels. 1. I feel like he's like a 3rd year player. 2. He looks young as hell. 3. I really like the arm anyway. I think he's one of those guys who'll do really well for himself in his 30's. Throws the ball athletically...commands his fastball...trusts his offspeed stuff and can locate with them...He's got the tools to breakout for the Astros even at his extremely advanced age (29).

Lol at cubs fans thinking Myers was better than he was. Doesn't he own us, like big time?

Probably why the thought occurred. I think he strung together some deep start/high K games at the end that looked good.

Does anybody overuse his breaking ball more? Does anyone's velocity fluctuate more? I've seen him hit 97 in one starter and then pitch his next starter at 88-91.

Yankees Sign Andy Pettitte

By Mike Axisa [March 16, 2012 at 11:34am CST]

The Yankees have signed Andy Pettitte to a minor league contract, reports Jack Curry of The YES Network (Twitter links). The Hendricks Sports client can potentially earn $2.5MM.

Pettitte, 39, announced his retirement from baseball after the 2010 season and did not play at all in 2011. ESPN's Buster Olney says (on Twitter) that the left-hander got the itch to return while with the team as a guest instructor earlier this month. Pettitte then informed the Yankees that he was interested in coming bacl. The team has left the door open for a return since he retired.

It's unlikely that Pettitte will be able to start the season with the team. Joel Sherman of the New York Post says (on Twitter) that he will use the rest of Spring Training to get in shape, then rejoin the club. The Yankees currently have CC Sabathia, Michael Pineda, Hiroki Kuroda, Phil Hughes, Freddy Garcia, and Ivan Nova for five rotation spots, so Pettitte makes seven starters for five spots.

He must of gotten bored or maybe sick of his wife nagging him to do stuff.

He was announced as their No. 2 starter, behind Jeremy Guthrie. WTH was their rotation last year?

You'd think these guys would be all about Randy Wells.

Pineda is out with Tendonitis. No idea how long, so that's one less guy for Pettitte to have to compete with. Trading away Montero probably isn't going to wind up being a great move for them.

Not a huge fan of Pineda either, but I'm surprised at his size. He's almost a 300 pounder! Built like an OT. Breaking stuff is filthy too, and at this point the changeup is underrated and has strong potential long term. I'm more on the fence with this move than I thought I would be, especially since Montero seems legit.

The Cubs cut him in Spring Training when he was 29. In 1992.

With MacDougal also getting DFA'd, my guess is our pen has a new edition soon. Braddock may fit better since he's a lefty, but Maine was passable when he was up, so who knows? But I think the Castillo experiment could end soon personally, even if it means we wind up trading for him.

heyman on mlb network says cubs are really interested in mike gonzalez

Are they just going to ignore the fact that Scott Maine's been really good this season? Braddock would be a decent buy low candidate, but Mike Gonzalez is just another 30 year old on the tail end of his career.

LOOGY candidate:

Gonzalez vs. L: 28.0 IP / 24.6% K rate / 5.5% BB rate / 2.78 FIP

Gonzalez vs. R: 25.1 IP / 20.0% K rate / 12.5% BB rate / 5.59 FIP

The days of Mike Gonzalez the shutdown closer may be finished — if they ever existed — but he has a very bright future as a LOOGY with upside. If Gonzalez can learn to get his control down against righties, or if he goes to a pitcher-friendly park that will keep deep flyball in the park, he could definitely become a weapon against both hands once again.

For now, though, some wise team should scoop Gonzalez up and plan to use him as a LOOGY. He’s seen a bit of interest on the rumor mill, but not much; he’s another one that can probably be acquired for fairly cheap.
