No one was under the impression that Morrison was a fair return for Zambrano, the hope was that the Marlins front office was pissed at him and would sell low(in addition to overvaluing Zambrano for various off field reasons).

The Boston Red Sox are close to finding out what Theo Epstein is worth, according to a report from ESPNBoston's Gordon Edes.

Edes reports that Boston will receive a quality minor leaguer from the Cubs, who hired Epstein as their president of baseball operations in October.

I'd guess Carpenter.

I would too. My best 5 guesses would be.

1. Carpenter

2. Beliveau

3. Dolis

4. Maine

5. Gaub

All 5 are replaceable. The Cubs probably would have fought hard to keep their starting pitching options on the 40 man so I doubt it's somebody like Wells or Volstad.

If it's McNutt, I will throw something. This is unfortunate, as I will likely be in class at the time.

McNutt's not on the 40 man.

Fun

I am fine with giving up any of those 5. Dolis is probably the guy I'd like to keep the most. Good news is that it's a guy off the 40 man so when we hopefully sign Soler we don't need to worry about dropping anyone off it, not that there aren't a handful of guys on it that I wouldn't care if we cut ties with anyways.

It's cute that SOSH still thinks "pitcher on the 40-man" leaves Garza on the table.

I wanted to go point and laugh, but it doesn't appear anybody has mentioned Garza after this report came out.

I'll echo what a poster on that site already has stated -- I'm more interested in seeing how the process plays out at this point than finding out which player is involved. I don't think it will really be a player of significance to either team. If it's Dolis I'd be fine with that.

What I really want, is to put a claim in on whoever they remove from their 40 man roster.

I saw someone at SOSH mentioning Bowden could be DFAed. Giving them Carpenter and claiming Bowden would make me irrationally happy.

Yep, that's what put the idea in my head.

Yeah, they seem resigned to getting a reliever. This was good though:

They have done a tremendous job of lowering expectations to almost zero. If the Sox get the equivelant if a AAAA guy, no team will let an employee interview anywhere while under contract again. They could make this pretty simple and just say if team A wants to hire the GM of team B , team B gets to send any contract they wish along with said GM. Either that, or say Team A can protect x players, Team B chooses from who is left. They should make this standard and take the guesswork out of it.
