Here's some other quotes he said after the conference

“I’m not going to comment on anybody in particular,’’ Epstein told a group of reporters after the formal news conference broke up. “The impact free agents, the long-term commitments, there’s a time and a place for those type of commitments. But you have to understand the time and place. It’s also important you understand the player."

“I don’t believe in curses, (and) I guess I played a small part in proving they don’t exist, from a baseball standpoint," he said to reporters after not being asked that question in the public portion of the interview. “I do think we can be honest and upfront that certain organizations haven’t gotten the job done. That’s the approach we took in Boston. We identified certain things that we hadn’t been doing well, that might have gotten in the way of (winning) a World Series, and eradicated them. That’s what we’ll do here."

Epstein went on to talk about “up the middle" players, an area where the Cubs are fairly well stocked at the moment. Look for him to try to steal a run producer from somebody this winter, like he did David Ortiz when he got to Boston, rather than come out of the blocks with a $200 million-plus offer for Fielder or Pujols, which could blow up on him.

“Baseball players have a prime age, an age starting at 26, 27, usually until about 31, 32," Epstein said. “You get the best production, the best bang for your buck with players (in that prime). Of course, the club we have will have a diversified roster. ... Ideally, you’ll have most of your players in their prime, hopefully homegrown.’’

Did Theo mention something about handing out how to play defense at each and every position? I will watch the presser when I get home but did he actually say this?

Someone asked him a question about defense and he said there would be an organizational manual on how to play every position (no surprise - this is something that was done in Boston). There is no question there will also be instruction on the approach a the plate and everything else they want to ingrain in players from the beginning as part of the organizational model or "Cub way."

He mentioned having a "Cubs Way" that would be documented and be started from the dominican summer league team all teh way up through the minors to the big club. Defense was only mentioned because Rich King brought up errors, and Theo said the "Cubs Way" would include defense.

Right. At the same time, it was also pretty clear that he's not going to mortgage the future in order to compete next year. It's definitely going to be a busy offseason. We may see some pretty interesting acquisitions this offseasons that are high-risk/high-reward.

A mortgage is a good thing if you structure it properly and buy the right house.

Lackey = the Interest Only, 100% financing in Nevada mortgage.

I do wonder if Theo would be more gun shy towards pitchers vs. hitters when it comes to big name FA's.

Man, Bernstein used to be good....it's sad how dumb he's gotten.

Thanks, guys. Well, clearly this does not bode well for Quade. The Cubs were horeendous fundamentally last season.

Quade or not, that's not something that will change overnight.

It's frustrating because he's the only person that knows about advanced stats and he'll actually cite BP and Fangraphs and he'll cite things like WAR, but then he just has completely idiotic takes on things/opinions.

he just doesn't understand that as his power develops, the walks will come. bernstein is in the infancy stage of understanding statistical analysis, he thinks walks are something completely created without causing a negative effect somewhere else. it's likely that is castro walks more with all else being equal, his slugging will decline at this stage of his career. but if his power continues to improve, he will naturally come in to walks.

I think you guys are missing the point he was making. Simply that Castro is not strong in some of the areas that Theo seems to deem as pretty important, like defense and plate patience. He was just saying Castro may need a little extra help to become what he potentially can and be a Theo type of player.

I'm referring to all the other dumb [expletive] he has said about this whole thing (in addition to some smart things), not so much the singling out of Castro on that issue out of nowhere (which was sort of weird).

All I got was what Lo Pan said...so yeah, I'm sure I'm missing details...

But it's not the first dumb baseball thing that Bernstein's ever said.

I've looked around online, but I can't find a video of the presser anywhere. Class was unskippable today.

Can anyone hook me up with a link?

Oh, I agree. For as intelligent as he is, he certainly gets fixated on dumb things sometimes. Crane Kenney for instance.

I don't know what he meant by a "Castro coach," but if you believe proper coaching can help young players develop, which apparently Epstein does, then helping Castro in the natural but not inevitable transition from young toolsy SS to reliable SS would be a pretty important task for the organization.

I agree. What's wrong with that question?

Coaching is fine. Hiring a coach for a specific player is a strange suggestion. I didn't hear the comment, just read it on here, so maybe it was presented differently than I read it.
