McNutt's a small price to pay considering Theo will have 5-6 better pitching prospects than McNutt in this system two years from now.

Sure. But what if the Cubs hired someone like Cherington or Hahn instead, but still made a major investment in the draft and IFAs like this year. How many marginal McNutts is Epstein worth over the next, freely available option?

There's value in Epstein's stature... another guy isn't able to put together a staff like he will be able to. Hoyer is a perfect example.

Again, the PR help for the public funding bid can't hurt at all, either.

I'm not sure how much value there is in all that, but the public funding is a BIG deal.

Theo gets the fans excited before the winning...the other guys will have to win before the people get excited.

That said I've been in the camp of wanting Ricketts to play hardball and not give up more than he has to all along.

I hereby motion that we make "Managerial McNutts" an actual statistic.

What was wrong with "marginal McNutts"?

Whoops. In my defense I'm ignoring a law class on my iPhone right now.

A top 50-100 pitching prospect is never a small price to pay, so Ricketts' awesomeness goes down a bit if McNutt indeed is the one going as compensation. Still good to have Theo and Hoyer, but it's not going to be as simple as some here seem to think to have numerous Trey McNutts in the system in a couple of years.

He's got a lot of potential and he's really close to making the majors.

The reality is Ricketts has given the go ahead to essentially sign as many over slot guys as possible in the draft. Just by doing that our chances of stocking up the farm with top prospects significantly increase.

Overslots may not be around for much longer. I really hope that Selig can't push that through, but I suspect he might.

From Levine:

The Red Sox initially asked for Cubs starting pitcher Matt Garza, and at one point proposed the Cubs take pitcher John Lackey's contract as part of the compensation, according to a major league source. Lackey has three seasons remaining on a five-year, $82.5 million contract. He was 12-12 with a 6.41 ERA in 28 starts for the Red Sox in 2011.

But the expected agreement will include Cubs minor leaguers, although not top prospects Brett Jackson, Trey McNutt and Matt Szczur, the source said. Cash will not be part of the compensation.

Pending confirmation of compensation, I've never before loved a man the way I love Tom Ricketts.

Agreed. Right up there with Johnny Depp.

What about James Cameron?

I love him for his mind, not his body.

I take it "older lesbian" doesn't do it for you?

Who Rosie O'Donnell? Good god no!

Even with all that money its highly unlikely we have multiple starting pitching prospects MLB ready in such a short time-frame.

Don't equate these forthcoming changes as a guarantee for a Title.

Last time I checked, baseball is still baseball, and the baseball gods make the decisions, meaning top players will make outs, prospects will make outs, non-prospects will make outs, and the real difference is the amount one pays for these outs.

The difference between winning and losing is skinny, especially in these days of drug testing. Go back and look at hitting and pitching stats in the pre-expansion era when coffee, caffeine, and speed were the drugs of choice, plus hot dogs and beer, and you will see what the standard was.

This change is no sure thing, but even if it was, what does it really bring you?

Not a paid off mortgage or a vacation home in the Keys, just worthless braggin rights????

Go be productive for your family, they are the only ones who care about YOU!!

OH MY GOD SHUT THE [expletive] UP

If total payroll is 150, my guess is it winds up 130 and 20 towards player development.

And I'm thinking that total number moves upwards if/when they get some improved revenues through ticket sales and the renovations.

Levine actually said that, if I heard correctly, the overall baseball budget will be in the "neighborhood of $200M."

So who knows.

Yeah, also the reason this McNutt conversation restarted was because of the tribune article, which was written by Sullivan.

I trust Levine over Sullivan.

I thought it was because of Kaplan's tweet.

Right, but even Theo isn't going to have Trey McNutt clones flooding into the system like crazy within a couple of years. I think McNutt is being heavily underrated right now - having a very talented pitcher right on the edge of making the majors is huge simply because he no longer has the high amount of risk that lower level guys, even major overslots, have.

I'm not saying we shouldn't bring in Epstein if we have to give McNutt, but I am saying if McNutt ends up going over there I wish we would have held out longer. It dampens my excitement a decent amount as it makes Theo's job that much tougher.

I think there's going to be enough pushback from enough teams other than the Yankees, Cubs, and Sox to keep that from happening. They're far from the only ones who do it. What i don't get is why that's part of collective bargaining. It would seem that the players would be totally against it (although I guess that would leave marginally more money for ML players) and that enough owners would hate it that it would be one of the first things to get dropped from negotiations.
