Not sure if this has been posted but the Cubs have been granted permission by MLB to hold the presser tomorrow. This might be the most anticipated press conference in team history.

Hard to say. Nomar, Harden, and even Dusty were all pretty anticipated.

Anticipated by *you*

Eff you, gooney.

Conversely MLBTR mentioned that Cherrington told Cafardo (spelling?) that no deal has yet been made.

But those are silly, foolish people. Let us not speak of them further.

What are your Reds looking to do this offseason?

i much prefer the no major leaguer/jackson/mcnutt/szczur reports. let's stick with those.

and i won't lie, i was excited about dusty. but i was pretty stupid about baseball then.

Pending confirmation of compensation, I've never before loved a man the way I love Tom Ricketts.

Agreed. Right up there with Johnny Depp.

This is pretty much how I feel. He's a decent prospect, but if parting with a decent prospect means lots more decent prospects in the future, then it's a good price to pay.

For those who don't end up clicking the Kaplan article, here is the quote from the unnamed GM

“I was very impressed with Ricketts' openness and honesty to do whatever it takes to make the Cubs one of the elite franchises in all of baseball," he said. "He is focused on the organization as a whole, not just a quick fix to stabilize the major league club. He is fully prepared to spend significant dollars on baseball operations and he is going to allow the next GM total authority. I wish it was going to be me but they are getting a great one in Theo Epstein and he and his staff should have the ability to appropriate how they want to spend the budget which should be in the area of 150 million dollars including the draft and amateur signings."

So, if the budget is $150MM on the dot (let's say), where would you guys expect that leaves us after draft/amateur signings?

I'd bet money that's Hahn.

You mean the deal that isnt supposed to be announced until tonight or tomorrow and they probably dont want the media breaking it sooner?

Sure. But what if the Cubs hired someone like Cherington or Hahn instead, but still made a major investment in the draft and IFAs like this year. How many marginal McNutts is Epstein worth over the next, freely available option?

Not a fan of McNutt being shipped out, if true, but I figure Theo will be concentrating heavily on pitching through the draft anyway next year, since it's a pretty big weakness. So, a couple of bigtime overslots and all's forgiven on that front.

Let's not get too overboard on the Theo love. McNutt was a consensus top 75 prospect last year who had injury issues this year. While I think he was a bit overhyped last year, his ceiling is awfully high. Asking Theo to add 5-6 better pitching prospects than what McNutt is right now in 2 years? Going to be tough. The Red Sox system he's leaving behind arguably only has 1 pitching prospect more intriguing than McNutt as of now (Ranaudo ... no way am I ranking Matt Barnes ahead of McNutt).

I don't mind giving up McNutt if that's what it takes in the end, but he's a very intriguing talent and asking Theo to come up with 5-6 better guys than him ... not that easy. Even if we account for the guys he's dealt away, well, Casey Kelly isn't viewed as highly anymore and is about on par with McNutt from a talent perspective. Masterson has turned out better than hoped for, while Hagadone never was able to adjust to stay in the rotation.

Apparently 1 McNutt?

30/30 GM/Owners trade Trey McNutt for Theo Epstein. Ricketts is trying to change the future of the franchise for 30+ years, not get 10-12 wins out of a potential #2 starter who has yet to do anything at the AA level.

Edit: I'll give McNutt a tad more credit

A top 50-100 pitching prospect is never a small price to pay, so Ricketts' awesomeness goes down a bit if McNutt indeed is the one going as compensation. Still good to have Theo and Hoyer, but it's not going to be as simple as some here seem to think to have numerous Trey McNutts in the system in a couple of years.

He's got a lot of potential and he's really close to making the majors.

I take it "older lesbian" doesn't do it for you?
