Right now it is Theo vs. whatever prospect(s). That's what's on the table. If it's not Theo, the Cubs will have to start over from some point. Maybe they've interviewed other candidates. But who wants to be second in a very public business process?

Who'll take a huge payraise to come to a franchise who has laid out an impressive organizational plan with a chance to break a historic championship drought in a world class city?

Probably nobody.

Maybe Jim Bowden.

I think a more realistic headline is, "Internet spaz 'Hollandsworth's mug' touches weiners."

honestly, I think you have the wrong poster

I think he was trying to be nice to you.

then he's just confused, I only touch winners.

Carlos Marmol is a bust?

He and Marshall are the only ones who have done anything. And Marmol is not exactly setting the world on fire anymore.

Maybe you can help me with my dilemma. I'm hungry but the store wants to charge me $100 for a loaf of bread. Obviousy not starving to death is worth $100, so I should do it, right?

My two year old has threatened to hold his breath until he dies *and* hate me forever if he does not receive additional cookies at snack time. I don't want him to die or hate me forever, so clearly he has the leverage on me.

About meathead fan reaction, Ricketts gives as many metaphorical poops as Truffle does real ones. If Ricketts cared about that stuff, Hendry would have been fired two years ago, Sandberg would be the manager and Soriano would be released.

You're right, he doesn't care about selling season tickets.

Do you think the Cubs sold more season tickets by hiring Mike Quade than if they hired Ryne Sandberg?

Maybe last year, who knows. Things like a popular manager or player do more for individual ticket sales, in my opinion, and have a limited long-term impact. I think it's pretty clear that all involved (Hendry, Ricketts, etc.) knew last season was going to be tough, and Ricketts probably knew he was going to have to replace Hendry if the team struggled again. He was obviously reluctant to give out long-term deals to players in the offseason, and he probably felt the same about a manager, particularly one as popular as Sandberg. Ricketts' mantra has always been that he has a long-term plan for the franchise, and the two key elements are a revamped Wrigley Field and a competent management team that is able to produce minor league talent. In his mind, Epstein is the perfect fit, and possibly helps him accomplish both of those goals. He's much more important to Ricketts than any manager or player, because he'll set the long-term tone for the franchise. Given what he's said about the future of the franchise, he becomes much more credible to potential season ticket holders by saying "Look, I've put the future of our team in the hands of a guy who won two World Series in Boston," as opposed to saying "We hired a new GM with no experience, but we got Ryno on the bench!"

Someone not as well-suited to the job as Epstein.

The analysis is, what's more valuable to the organization: the marginal difference between Epstein and the next-best candidate, or the prospect(s) the Red Sox want.

Kaplan's sources said the negotiation was contentious, and that Lucchino was a horrible human, and then Boston's guys reported that everything was civil and moving along well, so who knows.

Because Boston's "guys" were Lucchino.

If you know you can buy a car for $25,000... are you going to throw them an extra $1000 just to avoid the headache of negotiating it down?

A double A minor league prospect for a guy who has a solid model on how to win and win consistently is not a high price to pay. High ceiling guy or not.

Again, not the point. The point is that if you don't have to lose the double A minor league prospect with a high ceiling, why would you choose to?

Because of Lance Dickson.

For this analogy to work, you'd have to specify that bread is your clear favorite food, and the store you're at is the only one that has it.

So you could go someplace else, spend less, and get something less satisfying. You're not going to starve in either case.

In the event this doesn't get resolved before the World Series, I vote we lock this thread and not re-open it until actual substantive news becomes available.

I vote that you smell like poop.

man, what is this thread going to turn into if nothing gets done and the World Series starts? More WuTang clang lyrics? I think the Cubs should give them a piece of paper with the names of players they are comfortable giving up, say pick 2 and be done with it. If they don't like the list then to Hell with them.

The list would contain the names

Walrond

Mathes

There's a lot more players on these lists who have either

a) Turned into useful and/or valuable major leaguers

b) Been used as valuable trade pieces to acquire other players

c) Still retain MLB quality skillsets and have a chance to make, at the very least, an appearance at the major league level, whether it be in a small role or not

Your use of two years worth of Top 10 prospects filled with failed choices neglects the next three years which represent the years AFTER the Cubs hired Tim Wilken. While these lists aren't setting the world on fire, they have many more useful players on them that have been either beneficial to the club or beneficial via trades vs. outright busts.

The Boston Red Sox initially wanted Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Matt Garza to be included as compensation for general manager Theo Epstein, but the Cubs refused, according to major league sources.

Aside from compensation, another hold-up in the negotiations is believed to be which front-office personnel Epstein can bring to Chicago, according to ESPNBoston.com, which reported that the Red Sox were not going to allow Epstein to take any members of his inner circle. That could have changed, however, during negotiations.

Major League Baseball rules state a club has seven days to sign a person under contract to another team. This goes into effect after the team was granted permission to meet the employee. Teams can ask for an extension if the conversation appears to be ongoing, according to a major league source.

Epstein was still in Boston on Monday morning, according to a source.

??? A better analogy would be that the store is the only one that has your favorite variety of bread. But you could leave and go buy your second favorite variety down the street for $5 buck per loaf instead of paying $100 for your favorite variety.

Ricketts you idiot!!! You're going to hold up the trade because of one starting pitcher??

If you truly believe that, then you shouldn't want Epstein at all.

You should want Ricketts to hire the cheapest GM available, and pump the savings into the draft to get more prospects.

If they actually thought that was appropriate compensation, instead of just a negotiating ploy, then Lucchino and Co. are insane. Granted, I think they probably threw that name out there to see if they could con the Cubs into something good, but still make it seem like a good deal.

I guess Ricketts isn't interested in season tickets.
