From people.

Theo agreed to not take anyone to Chicago with him.

Cubs and BoSox agree to let Theo go for some prospects similar to Players to be named later.

Theo agrees to deal with Cubs.

Theo sees BoSox now trying to squeeze cubs for more prospects. In Theo's view, more than what was agreed upon. Seeing they are going to be his prospects, Theo feels BoSox, no longer honoring the spirit of the deal.

Theo goes back to his deal and starts naming guys he wants to take to Chicago. He has no real intentions of doing so, but now he has something to negotiate with. Says he will drop those demands if a deal is done.

I like the cut of the jib! This is called DEALMAKING 101, a class Jim Hendry never took!

Is it too late to retroactively rename my son?

What other board? And what is this? Is this what some guy is dreaming up as his idea of what is going on or is he dreaming it up and claiming it's true by saying he has some kind of inside source?

Someone should Photoshop a Red Sox hat on Darwin Barney.

How about Geo Soto too?

Hm... no thanks?

He's 29 years old and he isn't good behind the plate or at the plate. He hit .202 with RISP last year in 114 at-bats.

Theo Epstein sure as heck wouldn't care about the last stat. You're an importer.

And the first 2 aren't true...

The first 3, really.

I love how people hate the Crawford signing after only one year. Carl Crawford has been one of the better all-around players in the game for almost a decade, and was coming off two fantastic years. His contract may have been ridiculous, but going after him was not.

If they want to blame someone for the Carl Crawford contract, blame Mike Rizzo for giving Jayson Werth $126 million

I hated it when it was signed. And going after him isn't what people hate. It's his contract, which you admit was ridiculous.

ha, I thought they'd wait until the deal was at least done before they started seriously trashing Theo.

Yup, but it's 'business as usual' for the Red Sox with Theo hanging out and doing his job.

Eh, not really all that ridiculous in terms of how you're automatically overpaying for talent. It wasn't the best signing given how much of his value comes from his defense, but monetarily he was going to be "technically" underpaid per year based on the two monster seasons he had prior to 2011. Yeah, it's pretty easy to argue that it's too big a contract, but it's likely not a Soriano or Ryan Howard-type monster.

BOSTON -- Negotiations continued Friday between the Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs for Theo Epstein's services, but Red Sox principal owner John Henry spoke as if the deal is done.

"I would love to have Theo back," Henry said on 98.5 The Sports Hub in Boston. "I would have loved for Theo to have been our general manager for the next 20 years. That was my hope. That would have been my hope. But you don't always get what you want. I did everything I could personally, and so did Tom and Larry, to make that happen. The fact is that being general manager in Boston, being manager in Boston, is a terrifically tough job."

For the first time, Henry acknowledged that Epstein has spoken to another team, presumably the Cubs. But a few hurdles remain to Epstein going to Chicago. The Red Sox are taking a hard-line stance that Epstein not take any of his top aides with him, according to a team source.

Theo wasn't the only person involved in the Crawford contract, there are people who have said Luccino was ultimately responsible for the Crawford contract because he thought a big signing would boost TV ratings and excitement for the season. There was a top man in Boston and it wasn't Theo, ultimately everything in Boston went through Luccino. This is presumably one of the reasons why Theo wants to leave.

Little more of what he said

Red Sox owner John Henry, in an interview on CBS Radio, said that while CEO Larry Lucchino -- whose 10-year contract is up this year -- is expected to sign a multi-year extension this offseason. However, even though GM Theo Epstein remains in the employ of the Sox and Henry restated that he would want to retain him, he also acknowledged that the Sox are facing a "sad day" with the departures of both manager Terry Francona and Epstein.

"There’s a prohibition against announcements being made during the postseason in baseball. It would be unfair of me to the Cubs, who I don’t care that much about, but certainly to the Red Sox, Theo and the people involved to comment on what’s going on until there’s something to announce," Henry said about where negotiations stand with the Cubs regarding Epstein, who has agreed to a five-year deal with Chicago. "As far as I know, he’s still involved.

Tango evaluates it as if Theo were a player worth 18 mil over 3 years with one year remaining on the contract.

I’m thinking some mop-up reliever should be fair compensation, and fit in with the precedents of other baseball assets similarly traded.

Seriously, we are clowning the Red Sox in every way in this situation.

It is amazing when you think about it. Going in, I never would have guessed that the Cubs organization would come out of this situation looking this much better than the Red Sox organization.

I didn't even know the score had their own board. That's muddled mess. And they use PHPBB? cheap bastards.
