To this point, it’s would appear to be a foregone conclusion that Mike Quade’s run at manager on the North Side is over.

But Len Kasper, the Cubs play-by-play TV announcer, isn’t so sure the general consensus is right in that regard.

“Everyone assumes, and has assumed all along, that Mike wouldn’t be back,” Kasper told The McNeil and Spiegel Show on Thursday. “I think that’s a little premature. A lot of things have to happen: No. 1, Theo has to get officially hired; you’ve got free agency starting soon; you’ve got an entire baseball operation he has to get his arms around. I have a feeling, without any inside information, that Theo Epstein is going to view 2012 a lot like Tom Ricketts viewed his first year as owner of the Cubs. … I don’t think he’s going to come in here and clean house right off the bat.”

“It’s no guarantee of anything,” Kasper said. “We see examples of it all around baseball. All you can do is put the best team on the field you possibly can. You hire the best people to make those big decisions, and then you take your chances.”

Still, in baseball, anything can happen – and sometimes does.

“We don’t want to sit here and say the Cubs aren’t going to win in 2012,” Kasper said. “Anything is possible, as we saw with the Arizona Diamondbacks last year, but I think this is a long-term hire as opposed to a short-term one.”

Who did Controversy say she thought CC looked like IRL? I remember it being right on.

Right now, he's an enigma wrapped inside of a douche.

Douche? oooohhhhh buuurrrnnnn...

Bernstein is saying that his "city sources" tell him that Emmanuel is ecstatic about this and really wants to help them with the money. He just needs them to frame it in such a way that he can make it fly.

Gotta love politics.

Eh, I bet even Daley would have been on board after a development like this. A successful Cubs team means more money for the city, and the planned developments that they want to get done would just help maximize that money.

One of my favorite Cubs ever (though short lived), Todd Walkahhh talks about Theo

When you brought up the '04 team, I looked for the Todd Walker superman slide, but couldn't find it. Anybody have it handy? Such an awesome moment.

Not a fan of this type of article nor am I a fan of Telander, but Bernstein just read this story on air and I thought this was pretty hilarious.

http://www.suntimes.com/sports/8182958-419/theo-epstein-will-have-to-be-a-miracle-worker-for-the-cubs.html

Ponder this, Theo.

Back in 1982, the Cubs were announcing their new season’s motto — “BUILDING A NEW TRADITION’’ — at a news conference at the Hyatt Regency Hotel.

Dallas Green had been with the Cubs as president only a few months, but the new slogan was his way of thumbing his nose at the Cubs’ losing ways.

As the lights dimmed for an inspiring video presentation, marketing assistant Buck Peden got his tie caught in the screen that was lowering from the ceiling. The film that came on was nothing but unreviewed spring-training footage of pitcher Fergie Jenkins making endless pickoff moves to first base.

As new PR man Bob Ibach saw with horror what was unfolding, Cubs photographer Barney Sterling keeled over with a stroke. The camera toppled sideways, and the film kept displaying images on the wall. In the back of the room, the real Fergie Jenkins was partway through changing from street clothes into the new Cubs uniform, pants on the floor, and chaos reigned.

Ibach remembers that he couldn’t let go of the spring-loaded screen or Peden would be strangled and that through all of it, Green stood in the back of the room, stunned.

God bless you, Theo.

Welcome!

Make it happen.

This is the most awesome article on Epstein. Man, what a difference a good hire makes. (Oh, and a good owner)!!!

:good:

http://www.sacbee.com/2011/10/12/3977865/former-boss-kevin-towers-raves.html

Arizona Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers said Wednesday he once gave some advice to his Yankees counterpart, Brian Cashman, after the Red Sox hired 29-year-old Theo Epstein in November 2002.

"This kid is dangerous," Towers recalled saying. "Don't take him for granted.

Cashman's worry is now a concern for the rest of the National League as far as Towers is concerned.

Towers has seen Epstein develop from a person just happy to operate the radar gun at Qualcomm Stadium to charting pitches to reading scouting reports and joining him on minor league scouting missions.

While Epstein was learning his craft, he was earning a law degree at the University of San Diego, impressing Towers so much that he involved him in arbitration cases and negotiations with agents.

"I would enjoy giving him a project and expect him to take a couple of weeks," Towers said. "Theo would have it done by the next day. Of course, he would stay up all night. We wanted to be good. His work is off the charts.

"I'll never forget one morning he came into my office with the waiver list and said, 'We have to get this guy,' " Towers said. "It was David Eckstein. Eckstein was 5 foot 7, 155 pounds with no power.

"But Theo told me he was an on-base machine who would set up the middle of the order. I shunned him on it. The Angels got (Eckstein) and won a World Series (in 2002).

"Theo is a big-time thinker who has incredible instincts. He has zero fear, as he showed when he traded Nomar (Garciaparra). He has the ultimate blend of scouting and other (statistical) factors.

The best article on Theo is the SI piece.

And *barf*, Eckstein.

I was in the RF bleachers for that game. Those were heady days indeed.

Ugh, Theo just lost .0000000001% sexy points for once wanting Eckstein.

Keep in mind, this was back when Eckstein was undervalued, prior to 2002.
