Very thankful also that this didn't drag out for several days/weeks. But, admittedly, I was thinking about hunting for the sea lion/bucket GIF to revive for old times sake.

anybody know what the most popular yankees forum is?

There used to be a sticky with links to other teams bigger message boards... don't know what happened to it.

Might be worth reviving if we're gonna get excited about the Cubs again.

It's still in the FAQ forum.

I honestly didn't know there was a FAQ forum.

FOR [expletive]'S SAKE

SOME GUY JUST CALLED IN SAYING THEY HOPE EPSTEIN BELIEVES IN DEFENSE (FINE) AND SPEED BECAUSE THE "OTHER WAY" DOESN'T WORK AT WRIGLEY AND INSTEAD OF LAUGHING AT HIM LIKE THEY USUALLY DO, BOERS AGREED AND BERNSTEIN WAS LIKE "YEP HE BELIEVES IN DEFENSE, DON'T WORRY."

Defense has importance but what is "the other way"?

The thing that excites me so much about the Epstein signing is that the new ownership actually "got their man". With the previous ownership and upper management, it seems like they were always holding the door for everyone else to sign. Can't sign Vladmir Guerrero, we have Moises and Sammy in the corner outfield spots. Can't sign Carlos Beltran, Corey Patterson is going to be twice as good as Carlos. Each time a stud player became a potential reality, Hendry would miss the boat and sign people like Jeromy Burnitz (and his Coors Field inflated numbers) and Jacque Jones instead.

If the previous ownership was still in place and they finally did let go of Hendry in the same fashion Ricketts did, I'm pretty convinced we would not even be thinking about Epstein as a potential suitor for the GM job, and we'd just end up with some other retread instead.

I'm fully in Ricketts and Epstein worship mode. I'm excited to enjoy baseball once again.

Hendry seemed to have a weird infatuation with players and would move heaven and earth to get them. Mike Barrett comes to mind, and he tried to get Cliff Floyd a number of times before he finally landed him.

To me Hendry's fatal flaw was that he still had the scout mentality as a GM. He seemed to frequently be looking for the wrong thing for the right reasons. I remember a quote by Hendry during one offseason about the "moneyball" philosophy and I think it went like this, "Oh I like Billy [beane], we just look for a different breed of cat". That's about the most telling statement Hendry ever made about how he evaluated talent and signed players.

He drafted athletes, not baseball players and always tried to catch lightning in a bottle.

Has there been any word on the "compensation" due to the RSox beyond the $3.5M buyout?

It's all going down today.

According to John Dennis of WEEI in Boston, the Red Sox and Cubs will start talks regarding compensation for Theo Epstein on Thursday.

Tried my hardest to find Tree's infamous MS Paint Thread from 2004, but this is the close the internet wayback machine would let me get:

We need one of these for Theo.

I belive a few seasons' worth of the oldest threads got archived during one of the site crashes/rebuilds.

Yeah I know. There used to be game thread from the 2003 playoffs here. Crazy stuff. Was just seeing if for some reason the archive.org site happened to archive individual threads that got a lot of traffic at the time but I guess not.

Although Theo clearly has more impact on the current and future Cubs, I was still a bit more excited of Nomar.

-Part of it was because it would have more immediate returns with the Cubs being in the thick of a playoff race and seemingly Nomar was the midding piece.

-Part of it was because, while their were rumblings that Nomar was available, I don't recall many of us thinking we had much of a shot back then. There was no twitter to give us minute by minute updates and a few artciles casually mentioning the Cubs interest in Nomar, and many of those were speculation because the Cubs had a hole at SS.

-Part of it was because there was still a lot of leftover excitement from the previous year's team and people in general felt we were a lot closer.

-Part of it was because I was younger and my only major concerns in life were finishing college and having enough money for beer, so sports were a much bigger chuck of what I cared about on a daily basis.

nomar coming to the plate in his first AB with the cubs was such an epic moment. then he grounded into a double play on the first pitch, but nobody even cared.

didn't he end up having the game winning hit or something on a line drive to left?

IIRC, the Cubs had a small..maybe 2-1 lead throughout the majority of thet game, and in the 7th or 8th, they had a rally going and had already scored at least 1 run, when Nomar came up and kept the chains moving with a liner to left to score another run in the inning.

Edit: Memory was a little off. Cubs were down 3-2 going into the inning, and had scored 3 runs already in the inning before a Nomar liner to left made it 6-3 Cubs.

I vaguely remember someone once saying this was a family board. I'm setting some really disturbing visuals from this thread.

We should really bring back the hottest woman contests.

I just want this to be finalized already so Theo can get to work and fire Quade right away and get a new manager and start making some moves and cleaning up. The press conference is going to be one of the most amazing pieces in television history.

Nah. It gave Vance an outlet, but takes away time that I could otherwise be spending looking at actual porn.

I can't believe how good of an offense the Cubs looked on paper. Looking down that lineup on August 1st, here are the OPS's for the regular starting 8

.960 (Ramirez)

.930 (Sosa)

.910 (Lee)

.870 (Alou)

.850 (Nomar)

.825 (Barrett)

.820 (Walker)

.750 (Patterson)

Compared to this years team:

.871 (Ramirez)

.819 (Pena)

.773 (Castro)

.759 (Soriano)

.742 (Fukudome)

.721 (Soto)

.719 (Byrd)

.666 (Barney)

Different eras no doubt but wow.

And if the compensation talks fall through? Never know what will happen. There is still plenty of time for a change of heart. Relax people. Just don't want to see your hearts all broken.
