This team needs to be blown up

Nope.

Yes. The 2013 Cubs will be a whole lot different.

Of course. But not from being "blown up."

BOOM!

Dempster, Ortiz, Grabow, Lopez. Maine, Wells, Wood, Zambrano, Hill, Baker, Barney, DeWitt, LaHair, Pena, Ramirez, Byrd, Montanez, Soriano, Johnson, Campana, Colvin.

Yup, that's a list of players. Good job.

Go CUBS !!

I was thinking this earlier. Good post Fred. It's a sad state of affairs when the "almost announcement" of a new GM outpaces the in-game discussion.

FOR [expletive]'S SAKE

SOME GUY JUST CALLED IN SAYING THEY HOPE EPSTEIN BELIEVES IN DEFENSE (FINE) AND SPEED BECAUSE THE "OTHER WAY" DOESN'T WORK AT WRIGLEY AND INSTEAD OF LAUGHING AT HIM LIKE THEY USUALLY DO, BOERS AGREED AND BERNSTEIN WAS LIKE "YEP HE BELIEVES IN DEFENSE, DON'T WORRY."

He's absolutely right. Or at least he is about half the time. When the wind is blowing in, our high-powered HR guys do have a very hard time doing anything. Of course, if we didn't have those guys at all, we'd lose every game where the wind is blowing out at Wrigley.

For the Cubs, the right answer is probably a mix. Other teams might be able to get away building their team more towards one side of the spectrum or the other.

How many guys in baseball let alone on the Cubs are HR or nothing guys. You act like there are dozens of Dave Kingmans that we need to avoid.

Did I say there were? I thought I was giving the equivalent response to "you know, stats and scouting makes for a better front office than just one or the other."

THEIR BODIES AREN'T ALL WORN DOWN FROM ALL THE DAY GAMES.

I think it was that Boston Herald article this morning about how all the Red Sox players are bad human beings that was saying something about them complaining about too many night games on getaway day. Theo won't have that complaint to deal with here.

This Ricketts guy sure sucks too, huh?

This dude on facebook is always ripping on Ricketts for no reason. So after each of his recent good moves: firing Hendry, draft spending, and now this, I make sure to tag him in my posts, raising awareness of Ricketts awesomeness. When I linked the article about Theo today, his response was this - "Yea!yea!yea! First move: restore sandburgs dignity." Meatball.

I want DeRo back. I don't care if he's sorta old and bad now.

mlb network is about to do a "theo epstein's biggest challenges with the cubs" segment

this should be interesting

I've never watched much MLB network since the Cubs have pretty much sucked since it started. Guess I'm gonna have to check that out.

it wasn't anything of note. Talking about how Soriano's contract is the worst thing ever created and dan plesac saying the reds, cardinals, and brewers are a lot better.

Come on Dan, why you gotta diss us, remember being the conductor of the Cubs bandwagon train back in 08?

I want Gracie back. I don't care if he's a creepy old chain smoking guy still hitting on 19 year old girls.

The toughest decision for Epstein, who turns 38 on Dec. 29, may be personal. He grew up two miles from Fenway Park and his childhood dream of working for the Red Sox came true when he was hired as the GM. He does have a Cubs link, having jammed onstage with Pearl Jam, whose lead singer, Eddie Vedder, is a huge Cubs fan.

The bold cracks me up.

I'll admit that I wasn't impressed with Ricketts after the 2010 draft and all the talk about investing in player development. After the 2011 draft, firing Hendry and now Epstein I am extremely impressed. Not that he needed to impress BeerHere but it's nice to finally see ownership taking big steps in the right direction.

As has been said, WE WILL HAVE A REAL ORGANIZATION.

Thank you Mr. Ricketts. What safari?

clearly the "safari" was a trip spent with Bill James and Mr Beane to discuss how Mr Ricketts could change the world.

It worked.
