Wait...what's wrong with Lichtman?

Enlighten me. Seriously.

Just kinda unlikeable and arrogant and hard to swallow.

I would have no problem with Theo hiring him to head up the stats department and lock him up in a dimly lit basement with an spreadsheet however. Tango or Dolphin either, for that matter.

I hope Theo is not a fan of Soriano whatsoever and does everything he can to open LF up and just get rid of that contract. We can get the same production as him elsewhere for a lot less money. Plus, it frees up a spot for Brett Jackson also. Byrd needs to go also.

I'm trying to figure out why getting rid of a LFer is necessary to free up a spot for a CFer?

I don't know what the plan is, but if they wanna bring him up quickly and keep Byrd, Byrd can slide over to LF and put him in CF.The main thing is just getting rid of Sorianos contract and him and we can browse a lot of other options which Im sure would be a lot more productive and beneficial than what Soriano brings. Plus with his age, he's just going to keep getting worse.

That's more of a personal hatred, but he's certainly underqualified for an assistant GM position, and he's not the type I'd expect to work well in a team atmosphere. I don't believe he lasted too long in St. Louis.

Ah.

Why not platoon Soriano and Colvin and let Byrd play RF?

http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/the-first-moves-for-cubs-gm-theo-epstein/

Fun little read from Fangraphs.

News broke this morning that Red Sox President of Baseball Operations (the de facto Red Sox GM) Theo Epstein and the Chicago Cubs have agreed to, though not finalized, terms which will bring the Yale grad to Chicago’s Northside. The deal appears to be worth $20M over five years, but the Cubs will undoubtedly need to send compensation (say, a prospect or some Benjamins) the Red Sox’s way — which may well escalate the cost beyond what’s beneficial to the Cubs.

If the compensation package includes a number of significant prospects, this may well result in Theo Epstein starting from scratch as the Cubs GM. So, let’s assume he is starting with a largely depleted farm system (one that was half-depleted in the Matt Garza trade). What moves does Epstein need to make immediately? And no, extending John Grabow is not one of them.

Also I would strongly consider, slash, desperately pursue bringing in the likes of Tom Tango (Tango Tiger) or Mitchel Lichtman (MGL) for chief analyst or even assistant GM roles. If the Red Sox were able to get Bill James, why wouldn’t these standard of baseball research be within reach?

Only thing I don't like is how far he thinks the current MLB team is from being competitive.

I think he is being pretty realistic. I'm also in agreement that unless the Cubs can swing some trades for some significant upgrades, they shouldn't resign Pena or Ramirez. Offer both arbitration and use the money to draft some very good prospects in the draft.

I'm OK with that. Not the best solution, but better than getting rid of Soriano and paying him to play somewhere else.

Haven't we had enough of the cuddly, non productive people in this franchise?

Steve Jobs was arrogant and hard-headed.

If he does the job..I'll take him.

I can hardly wait to see how Theo handles the mess Hendry and the Tribune left the Ricketts.

I wouldn't call myself happy, but I think I'm really pleased with Ricketts. For a while I thought he was a meathead, turns out I'm wrong.

Let's get this world series over and start the wheel'n and deal'n.

My cube mate from Boston is rather bitter and doesn't give Theo any credit for the 2 World Series titles.

Sour grapes?

Nope. He's absolutely right. Listen to your bitter cube made from Boston.

Watching Sox and Cardinal fans on facebook get all pissy about this is kind of fun.

It boils down to people saying that the Cubs players still suck, as if the GM has no power to replace them and then they just say John Lackey and Carl Crawford repeatedly.

I think GM's get more credit and take more blame then they really should get anyway.

Theo is new blood to a lifeless orgainization and the GM position. I am excited but I have tempered expectations for the short term, greater for long term.

Why do you feel this way? Considering they are the guy who puts a team together I can't agree with this. Aside from limitations placed upon them by owners and payroll I would think they have one of the biggest impacts on team performance.

Ugh.

Bernstein just suggested Theo hire Colletti as an adviser.

How he can say some of the things he does about SABR and even go on that rant about Juan Pierre and then say stuff like this is incomprehensible.

Just would like to take a minute to tell all of the morons in the media (local and national) to go [expletive] yourselves. Despite your best efforts to make it seem like Chicago is not an attractive destination because of what a horribly run organization this was and the microscope Theo would be under, you lost.

Kaplan (Granted, big Cubs fan but wrote an assanine article about the GM job here)

Bowden

Rosenbloom

Olney

And that's just to name a few.

Again, [expletive] off! :hello:

Because Ned Colletti was nice to him. No matter how smart somebody is, they're still swayed by personal interactions. [expletive], I still defend Mike Imrem (is he still around?) because he helped me out for a journalism class in college.

Who exactly deserves the credit and blame for successful/unsuccessful organizations if not the GM?

If that's your stance then the Cubs made the biggest mistake by hiring Theo since his team just had an epic collapse of all time.

I prefer the body of work over time. I imagine so does everyone.

I know. He used to be a friend of the show. Still drives me nuts when they speak highly of him. Just avoid bringing him up at all.
