Theo Epstein and the Chicago Cubs have agreed to a five-year, nearly $20 million deal for him to join the team, sources told ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney Wednesday.

The $20 million includes the Cubs picking up the conclusion bonus in Epstein's Red Sox deal, sources said.

Epstein has been to Chicago on two separate occasions to meet with Cubs officials, sources said. He was Red Sox general manager for nine seasons and had one year remaining on his current deal in Boston.

According to sources, Major League Baseball expressed great concern over the compensation package because they do not want this deal to affect how other teams compete in the market for front-office personnel.

A source with knowledge of the talks told ESPN's Karl Ravech Tuesday that the compensation would involve prospects and/or cash, but no major league players would be part of the deal, following traditional precedent.

WEEI, which first reported an agreement between Epstein and the Cubs, said that a title has not yet been agreed upon, but it has been assumed that he will get a higher title than what he had on the Red Sox, executive vice president/general manager.

Neither the Cubs nor Red Sox have formally acknowledged that the Red Sox granted permission to the Cubs to interview Epstein, but an industry source said Tuesday that Cubs owner Tom Ricketts spoke with Epstein last week and that Epstein met with Cubs president Crane Kenney in Chicago last weekend

Epstein likely will be restricted, in an agreement between the teams, from bringing any Boston employees with him without approval from the Red Sox, according to an American League source.

Executives with the Red Sox either declined comment or did not respond to requests for a response. Epstein did not respond to a request for comment, although there were indications Tuesday night that the Red Sox were hoping that Epstein might yet change his mind.

My friend from Boston says Dan Duquette built the 2 championships, not Theo. He is a bit of a meathead, so I expect you guys to tell me how wrong he is here.

The first one you might be able to make a case for. But the second one? Not a chance. Pure meatheadery.

Besides, it's not the specific rings that makes him an awesome candidate. It's the consistent regular season success. Or more specifically, the amazing drafting and trading history.

This. I almost resent selling him based on the rings because it sends the wrong message.

You can't plan/build toward winning world series championships. All you can do is build really good teams that win division crowns and then hope and pray.

I hadn't realized before that Epstein started as GM of the Red Sox the same year Hendry started as GM for the Cubs. Two roads diverged.

I went to bed last night certain that this whole Epstein situation was going to turn back into a pumpkin by the time I woke up. I don't know how to be excited and optimistic about the Cubs... but I'm beginning to learn.

So with Theo on his way over, who else does he bring in? Hahn? The Trib suggested Glanville in some capacity, which would be a bit intriguing...

Is it wrong of me not to get excited just yet? I probably won't until I hear the Cubs confirm that the deal has been done.

Yes it's wrong. Get excited, dammit!

Will Carroll guessed a reuniting with Byrnes as assistant.

I never comment really on sport writers, I just read the article for information and think nothing of it, but my God, Rosenbloom is the biggest, negative douche Iv'e ever seen. He whines and complains about every little thing and thinks he's clever and funny. Right away he pisses on Theo coming here with this article. How in the hell does this guy have and keep a job? It's just pure trash he spews out in his garbage that he writes.

The smartest move you could dream of.

But it’s the Cubs. So, it will turn into a disaster. That’s what the Cubs do.

Somehow, some way at some time, the hiring of Boston general manager Theo E\pstein will splatter all over the team, the fans and the North Side like the seagulls at 4:30 every summer afternoon at Wrigley.

It’s not a done deal, which means it could still blow up in the Cubs’ faces. Tom Ricketts is Baseball McCaskey, after all.

But it might not be Ricketts. It might be a nut owner in Boston wanting to look like a hero and save his boy wonder.

For now, though, the storyline has the Cubs thisclose to hiring Epstein, who is fresh off presiding over the greatest late-season collapse in baseball history.

Perfect Cub, indeed.

Perfect hire.

Perfect qualifications.

And that collapse wasn’t just a collapse, by the way. It was nuclear and laughable --- the kind of choke for which they build statues at Wrigley Field.

Errors simply quoted.

Epstein, see, has yet to win a Series without a juiced-up middle of the order.

Damn, didn't even think of that. Call everything off.
