In a couple of years, the Cubs are going to have a large, competent development system with an organizational handbook and a coherent, intelligent philosophy.

And we're going to have our own proprietary statistical evaluation models. What is the exact name for the Cubs' shade of blue?

Any chance that with Epstein on board, He can convince His superiors and inferiors not to do something silly with Zambrano?

Like eat the entirety of his contract to play for another team? Agreed, but Zambrano is gone. What really remains are the financial details, but based on the comments earlier in the thread about obtaining the right players (can't remember the exact verbiage), it sure sounds like Ricketts has turned the page on Zambrano. I think he's gone and there is very little chance he pitches for the Cubs again.

hmmm, stone is indicating that fleita may be sent to the dominican permanently.

Just what we need. Swingy guy telling the rawest players we'll be signing to be more swingy, as they already like to be.

Cashner and/or Jackson for Epstein???? #-o And some of you guys make fun of my trade proposals. :-k

I wouldn't trade either but either of those for Epstein is far less absurd than that Upton/Davis package of yours.

It's a tossup, IMO.

We aren't trying to get Epstein out of some 15 year contract to come to the Cubs. The only reason he's interested is because he's at least a little disgruntled in Boston, and he's only under contract for another 12 months. For the Red Sox to demand any player of value(aka anyone who would play in MLB or find themselves on a Top 15-20 prospect list), is a desperate attempt that someone like Ricketts should see right through. He can respond "you can take whatever trinket I'm offering(cash, minor league filler, Bryan LaHair) and get something for Theo, or you can trap him in Boston for 12 months and piss him off, assuring he's gone after 2012 for nothing". The Red Sox have no leverage to demand value.

Absurdity is paying an extreme price for something that you don't have to. You are absolutely correct - the Red Sox have no leverage to demand value. It's like the Cubs trading Zambrano and/or Soriano and wanting something of value. The Marlins were idiots for giving up 2 decent prospects for Guillen.

Little known fact: his full name is Theodore Luis Pedro Philippo DeHuevos Epstein

What are your sources on that? I heard his full name was Theodore Mutombo Mpolondo Mukamba Jean Jacque Wamutepstein

So...

I wonder if Epstein will be sort of a Ricketts, where He takes a year to get a feel for everything.

Or if He'll come in and start sending trades flying everywhere to rebuild the team in His image.

I think he will come in boner raging

Fleita to be given even cushier job to get out of the way, Quade shot out of a cannon, and 1 major FA signing we're all hoping for

I'm guessing he will be aggressive early with players, but wait a little bit with the front office. I guess he brings a couple guys with him, but they will be replacing the Hughes/Littlefield/Wasserstrom/Bush positions, and then figure out what he wants to do with Fleita and Wilken.

Holy [expletive], Epstein isn't even officially here, and he already has the power to exile people. I had no idea how much power he had. Surely he can sign an elite 1st baseman. Unless of course Scott Boras wants to spend the rest of his days in Siberia.

Cubs.com will have choked to death on its own bile in a futile effort to find something to complain about.

It'll be very interesting to see if he's allowed to bring anyone with him/ And if not, I hope we at least somehow find out a little bit of how much change is happening within the front office.

Stone just said we have to get more left handed.

Awesome.

Come on, we have Colvin, LaHair, DeWitt, Campana, Hill. Now if he meant good left handers, he should have been more specific.

I have lost all respect for Stone.

If Kenney is on board with moving from President to President Business Operations as his official title, he should be applauded for being so on board with doing what is necessary to help the team.

Or he could simply be happy with not being fired. Just saying.

Really, this should have very little effect on his job. In fact, he probably gets paid the same to deal with less crap he doesn't really give a damn about. Go make more money so we can buy more good players.

Actually, we might not have to worry about it. After so many of their to guys have been blown up, I hear Al Qaeda is looking for a new chief.

No effect on his job, but his title is president, and having it be president business operations is ceding some of his presidency to Epstein.

TT, if you're around, would you mind posting a link to that Red Sox SI article you talk about on Gateway Redbirds?

It's obviously going to have some bias, but SI's piece on Epstein from their Moneyball issue certainly paints Theo as the guy getting most of the things done. Off the top of my head, he took the initiative in creating a handbook that encompassed all of player development, down to what drills they put guys through, how pitchers are handled, etc. He's also been very involved in the scouting/drafting side, at least in developing the structure there. Now there's only so much one guy can do, so obviously it'll be up to him to find valuable people to put alongside him(and a lot of the rumors from last night were about him potentially taking people with him). But considering he was very instrumental in putting that together in the first place, he would be the President so there wouldn't be a Lucchino to get in the way, and that Ricketts has said he doesn't want to be heavily involved with the day to day, I don't see a reason that he can't create something in a similar vein in Chicago. At the very least, I find it incredibly unlikely that the Red Sox success is not very much his responsibility, because of the role he had in setting up the processes they have now. He had the good fortune of inheriting a good team that wasn't being run by imbeciles, but he also inherited the most competitive environment in MLB.
