The Rays will be able to make their rotation even scarier by adding 22-year-old Matt Moore to it.  Tampa Bay also has righty Alex Cobb and lefty Alex Torres ready for the majors.  The Rays could parlay their pitching depth into offense by trading Cobb, Torres, Jeff Niemann or Wade Davis if need be.

Shields would be my top choice. Well, Price, Hellickson, or Moore would, but I'd take any one of these guys. I wish that we could find the factory that keeps churning these guys out.

Anyway, would a package built around Soto and some prospects be reasonable, assuming we're comfortable with a Castillo/Clevenger tandem? Maybe Geo, 2 major league ready guys(J. Jax, LeMahieu, Russell, Colvin, Barney, Dolis etc) and 1- 2 lower level guys and get a prospect or 2 kicked in from them? Just going off the Garza template but using Geo instead of a top prospect but better big league ready players than Fuld and Chirinos.

In a year Shields will cost just money.

Wade Davis wouldn't be a bad buy. As someone else suggested maybe even target one if their prospect arms. I say why not hold out for the day Price becomes available...in a couple years.

Personally the Ray I'd like to see on this team is BJ Upton. I think he could hit 30 HRs at Wrigley with a good OBP and strong CF D.

How about Wade Davis + Upton for Barney (to play SS) + Colvin + LaHair (1B/DH) to open the negotiations.

That's more likely to close negotiations (the Rays hanging up) than to open them. I can't imagine Colvin is the type of player the Rays would value very highly (given their highly statistical, patience/OBP approach) and LaHair won't carry any real value at all on the trade market. Barney might, but he'd be more of a throw-in with value than the centerpiece of a trade.

I actually think they wouldn't mind buying nice and low on Colvin. His size/speed/D/power potential would interest more teams than you'd think IMO. Hes really only a tweak or so away from being a pretty useful player. He couldn't headline a deal isthe only thing.

They'd hang up no doubt, but that's because nobody is going to want LaHair for anything of any kind of significance.

I should also add that neither Cobb nor Torres is talented enough to unseat one of the guys in their rotation.

28 other teams can beat that offer.

Not going to argue with any of you about a fair offer for Davis and Upton, but it would save a lot of money for the Rays since Upton is way too expensive for his production (nice way of saying he has had 3 consecutive bad years with the exception of SB) and Barney would look like an All Star next to their other shortstops. LaHair could be a cheap option as a DH or bat off the bench and Davis is replaceable in their rotation.

In the last three years, BJ Upton has amassed 10.5 fWAR. Nobody on the Cubs this year has been that productive over the previous three seasons.

Exactly. That's why I'd rather go after them. As good as Garza was when Tampa traded him, Shields is much, much better. I can't even think of a package we could offer (without Castro) that the Yankees couldn't beat. I wonder if Castillo could get us one of them.

The question isn't whether the Rays would have motivation to deal Upton and Davis, the question is whether a 3 WAR cheap SS, a cheap OF with the upside of a 4th OF who has struggled to hit, and a nearly 30 year old first baseman who finally put together a big year in his (I believe) 5th year in AAA would be enough to make them bite.

I don't think that offer comes close.

I definitely think there would be interest there, but in order for B2B's deal to work, they'd have to value Colvin very highly. Because of his lack of patience and OBP potential, I don't think they'd put a lot of value in him. The cheapness and usefulness would make him a valuable piece to them as a throw-in, however.

It doesn't work that way in baseball. The only time you'll see that kind of salary dump to the first taker in line is if either the player is a problem to the team or if he sucks. When it comes to good players, especially young ones, you'll always find a taker willing to give up something for value so its senseless to offer our AAAA role players for these guys.

Wait, what?

What Tampa will get for Shields will make Cub fans grateful for the price we paid for Garza, if they aren't already. Whoever trades for Shields will be paying for him coming off his most aesthetically pleasing spreadsheet, and they'll be bargaining with a FO that demands a good price for their talent (deservedly so). He's a high end pitcher no doubt, but I'd rather have Garza's power arm moving forward.

Yeah, nobody here overvalues our players.

Since I'm too lazy to start a thread on him...

I know this team has pen arms. I know the bullpen is actually a strength. That said, Jon Broxton might be available for a one year incentive laden deal this offseason. He's fallen off a little from dominance a while back and is coming off TJ surgery. Why not?

Wait...wha?

I completely thought you were kidding. Good thing I didn't make fun of the guys making serious replies.
