Brad Biggs said that Lance Briggs' contract is now 60% paid out and that he doesn't have any more roster bonuses moving forward.

Yep, it makes sense for Briggs to try to pick this fight now though. He's not gonna get primo money if he waits till the deal is done.

Then maybe he shouldn't have signed it in the first place. Hey Lance, have fun sitting out the next 3 years if you don't get a new contract. I'm pretty sure that Soldier Field will still be full whether or not you and your over-inflated tackle numbers are there or not.

Stuff like this is what sucks about the NFL. I know the players take the risk with no guaranteed contracts and it sucks for them, but complaining and trying to negotiate with 3 years left on a market value contract when only like 2 teams had any interest when you were an unrestricted free agent 3 years ago? [expletive] off.

lol. u mad?

That's a lot venting over nothing. Dude hasn't threatened to sit out. He said in the paper this morning he doesn't want a trade. Only people reporting he would ask for one are media, and we all know how accurate they can be. This is the way the NFL works. Briggs is just doing what he needs to do for himself. I don't begrudge him that. It's how the system is set up.

The guy made it clear he's not sitting out this year and that his hope is to have an extension before next season.

The NFL does not suck so your commentary really doesn't make any sense.

Unless your owner is Mike Brown, there's no way that Briggs sits until the end of his deal.

The thing about the NFL is that their average career is much shorter than the other 3 sports, even for good players. And unlike a sport like baseball where you can sign an 8 year deal at age 30 and suck the entire last half, the first year you suck in football, you suddenly become too expensive to keep and are cut. So you have a player like Shaun Alexander who wins the MVP and has one of the better all time seasons at RB getting cut just 2 seasons later, and out of football 3 seasons later.

Making $10 million in a career might sound awesome right now but you are talking about only $100,000 a year for the rest of your life post taxes. I understand 100k is a lot of money, but compared to the average NBA or MLB player of similar skill level, it doesn't compare.

So in that respect, I definitely understand why NFL players do everything in their power to maximize their earnings while they are playing their best.

Sean Jensen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports Chester Taylor will be cut by the Bears.

It's about time.

What a gloriously ridiculous waste of money.

I still chuckle when thinking about how people lumped those three guys together last year just because they spent so much. An All Pro pass rusher. A washed up blocking tight end and a washed up backup running back. What a haul.

Maybe Jerry had buyer's remorse this offseason.

Seriously, what a splurge.

Basically all we did was sign Julius Peppers at the expense of Alex Brown. Obviously a huge win for us, but not nearly the spending spree that was reported in the papers.

It was a spending spree. They spent a hell of a lot of money. They just did it terribly inefficiently and wasted millions of dollars.

I didn't expect Chester to be that bad.

I thought it was too much money, but that we got a decent 2nd RB option from it. So I, for one, can't claim that I knew CT would turn out like this.

Bears cut Ghoulston too.

Also linebacker Tanner Antle, center J.C. Brignone, defensive tackle Tank Tyler and quarterback Trevor Vittatoe

He was bad, there was no pash rush from him. It was John Theirry (sp?) all over again, just that the Bears didn't use the 1st on him this time.

Good. It didn't seem like he was impressing anyone. I wonder where he goes from here. I would have loved for him to turn his career around here, but oh well, he's a buckeye.

Taylor's release isn't actually official, though they told Taylor it would happen. They have to go from 80 men to 53 on Saturday.

Hmmm...dunno if they just confirmed that they informed Taylor that he will be released. Brad Biggs trib article says specifically that they haven't made it official.

PFT is confused too...

Taylor’s agent, Ken Sarnoff, writes on Twitter that coach Lovie Smith told Taylor that he’ll be released. Now, the Bears are telling Sarnoff that Taylor hasn’t been released.

Seems pretty clear to me. They haven't released him, but plan on doing so before Saturday. I don't think that's a huge mystery.

Great news about cutting Taylor because that most likely means Barber's injury isn't serious. Let's also give Kahlil Bell some carries this year.

I'm sure it's been discussed, but I'm pretty excited about getting Okoye into the mix at DT. I know most of his success in the preseason has been against backups, but he adds depth to what should be a pretty deep DT rotation. Melton, Adams, Toeaina, Okoye, Paea, Harrison. No studs, but it's still a solid group.

But with Gholston cut, I have to wonder if Melton will start out at end again this year, especially with Wootton expected to miss a game or two. With him out, there is nobody to backup Peppers or Idonije.

Probably best that we didn't swing a trade for Osi though, he just underwent knee surgery.

I think the story here is they told him he will be released so others teams can prepare to sign him, but they are holding onto him until Saturday to make sure they get through the week without injuries to RBs.

They are doing him a favor while covering their own backside.

Presumably they didn't let Taylor play on Saturday because they didn't want him to be injured and be on the hook for his salary. So now what will they do Thursday? Do they run Taylor out there and risk the injury to him, or run Bell out there to get a crapload of carries?

Posted

You run Bell out there or that undrafted RB if he's not already cut.

I'm sure the Bears would rather not be stuck paying Taylor and not be able to play him. If Bell gets the carries, worst case scenario is he gets hurt and they replace him with a minimum salary player. I'm not saying it has 0 importance, but 3rd string running back is not so important that you have to risk playing a player that you already plan to cut. Plus a ton of things could go wrong. Couldn't he basically refuse to play if they tried to play him? I mean they told him he's cut, why would he going out and risk injury? Plus even if he gets only mildly hurt, he could play it up to ensure he gets paid from the Bears.

I dunno seems like an unnecessary gamble.

He would theoretically want to show other teams that he can play and he's protected against injury by his current contract.

the manumaleuna signing was dumb. the chester contract was actually kind of clever, they thought that they could get a good year out of him, and there was really no indication that he was washed up. he had minimal miles on him and wasn't going to be counted on as a feature back at all, they signed him to a deal that was front-loaded. it didn't work out, but no one could have forecasted how bad he was last year. if he would have done well, they would have had him for 2 more years on the cheap.

I would have loved it too.

Maybe he gets one more shot on someone's roster before the season starts, just for a cup of coffee.

Otherwise he'll need to decide whether he wants to try football at a lower level (Arena, Canadian), or look for another line of work.
