Really, my point on this being a ploy on the part of the FO is don't get too concerned with media reports we're looking to resign him. There is plenty of room for subterfuge to be utilized by the Cubs, something they haven't done in nearly a decade, and hopefully this is a sign they are willing to play that game now.

That's all fine and good if that's what they're thinking. I just pray they're not buying into all this leadership BS.

Eh, the person that is gonna make the first base decision next year is likely not even working for the Cubs right now

When did Kenney get the boot?

I'm guessing that you're insinuating that Crane Kenney will have a hand in deciding our next 1B, which isn't likely.

I'm guessing he's being sarcastic.

I'm going to go ahead and throw this out there: Carlos Zambrano and Carlos Pena for A.J. Burnett and cash. We could then have a 2012 rotation of CJ Wilson, Matt Garza, Ryan Dempster, AJ Burnett, and hopefully Andrew Cashner but probably Randy Wells. Still wouldn't be as good as the Brewers but would be an improvement over what we have this year.

Because the only thing better than Z for one year at 18 million is Burnett for two years at 18 million.

That would be awesome. On talent and not contract Burnett is a great buy low candidate.

Which is why I said Burnett+cash.

People have been mesmerized with Burnett's talent for years and he can never seem to completely put it together. I will say most of his best years have been in the NL.

I'd take '08 and '09 Burnett definitely, and I'm sure he's another one who'd enjoy the AL East to NL Central move. I wouldn't acquire him in hopes that he takes The Leap, but rather that he goes back to his career norms. That's a pretty solid pitcher, and one that's handled the pressure of being a 2/3 on a WS winner.

Really, I still like the arm. Hell, I like it better than when he was younger and threw harder. Back then I thought his arm was going to explode on every pitch, but mechanically he's much more sound. I've seen all of his starts with the Yankees and I just don't get what's been wrong...It's a whole bunch of things...pitch selection...he definitely gets too conscious of his mechanics (maybe a product of having crappy ones as a young pitcher)...command can go...

On a side note...Why weren't the Cubs in on Andrew Miller? He's looked really good throwing the ball with all the changes the Red Sox have made. Considering that the Cubs managed to save a fastball/slider lefty in Gorz, why couldn't they take on a healthier, younger gamble in Miller? *Shakes fist*

As I've said, my choices 1A and 1B are Fielder and Pujols, with Cuddyer as a distant backup plan, and even then he could shift to outfield if we were to land Votto in '13. If we can't get them, I have no interest in another year of Pena.

Why favor Cuddyer so strongly over Pena?

Pena career WAR/season: 1.7

Cuddyer career WAR/season: 1.3

Past 5 seasons WAR:

Pena: 1.6, 1.0, 2.9, 3.7, 6.0

Cuddyer: 3.0, .8, 2.8, 0.0, 2.5

Career wOBA:

Pena: .358

Cuddyer: .346

Pena is just one year older than Cuddyer as well. To me, if you like one there's no reason not to like the other and if one is a good fallback option then the other should be as well. They're very similar players.

Don't the Cubs owe Pena differed money for next year? If the Yankees paid that it would be like getting Burnett for about 12 mil next year which might not be too bad if he returned to career norms.

Pena's money is to be paid to him by the end of this year; half of it is deferred after this season, but it's still owed to him by January 2012.

So I'll assume a trade isn't happening. So now that he's been waived and pulled back, we can waive him again, but this time it would be irrevocable, does that sound about right?

Right waive him again, anyone claims him he's theirs.

Maybe the Cubs are taking the stance that they have no interest in Pujols or Fielder so as not to force the hand of a prospective GM, assuming the job might appear less attractive if it comes with the caveat of "Pujols/Fielder or bust"? Possibly? That's all I got.

I prefer the stance that there will be an open battle between Pujols and Fielder for the open Cubs 1b job, with the loser manning RF instead. This playing the cards close to the vest game is over. Long live Hendry, somewhere else.

I say Fielder in LF, with Pujols at 1B, but give him some reps at 3rd so we can move him there when we sign Votto in '13.
