B&B on the Score were just talking about that Joel Sherman tweet. Their opinion is Epstein will be named Team President and GM. Matt Abatacola guessed that it will be officially announced on Monday, October 17th, since that is an off day from the playoffs and the day before the World Series.

If we somehow confirm that the Purple Shirt guy's story was correct, it just proves that sometimes rumors that are way too insane to be believed just end up being true. (i.e. SAS' Lebron, Wade, Bosh rumor everyone mocked)

Also in the podcast Olney says according to the people he talks to in the organization the Cubs won't be major players for Pujols or Prince.

Especially since that's the only way anything would leak with the way Ricketts has kept this on lockdown.

That's been reported elsewhere too. I think no one really knows until the GM is hired.

If they loose Aramis and Pena and don't sign a big FA the Cubs offense could be really offensive... Badumbum!

Not that surprising, but how can he possibly know that for sure when we don't have a GM?

I don't understand how he can say that, and how anyone can be sure what will happen with any players when we don't have a freaking GM.

He must have meant October 18th, as NLCS Game 7 is scheduled for the 17th and the WS starts on the 19th, after checking.

This X 10. Didn't Ricketts pretty much say that the new GM would have money available and he'd be able to do what he wants, within reason?

If it's done and they can keep it secret until the 18th I think Ricketts should be the next Director of the CIA.

Not only that, but then the Red Sox would have to keep it secret for another week too. Seems pretty unlikely, but then so did a lot of things about this whole scenario.

Most reports have stated the Cubs probably won't go after either big first basemen. But most of them may just be basing it off of assumptions about Ricketts' statements regarding the draft/prospects/development. So who knows.

"Losing" Pena would have absolutely nothing to do with it. If they lose Ramirez and don't get Pujols or Fielder, the offense will suck.

The way Ricketts has done business with Hendry and now with the GM search, I don't believe anyone knows anything about who we will or won't go after.

I'm at the point where I think the new GM has already been hired, and next July we'll still be wondering who it is.

So we are talking about hiring a GM who has gone out and bought some of the most expensive FA available every year for the past 5 years. We say we are going to have about $50 million to spend. And we are not going to go after the top two FA available, one of which is the best FA to hit the market in over 10 years, and maybe of our lifetime. That makes sense.

$50 million seems a bit high.

The offense isn't going to be competitive with or without Puljos or Fielder. We'd just be mediocre instead of bad. Id honestly just rather be bad and pick up another high round draft pick the following year. I'm assuming Aram is gone, which honestly he should be since he's aging and I wouldn't want to give him a multi year deal. I just don't see the hope of being competitive next year as being very realistic but I know a lot of you guys do. There were a bunch of you guys that thought we could be competitive this year to and we see how that went. I realize Fielder is relatively young and maybe the type you could build a lineup around but I greatly dislike his body-type and I think he will be prone to break down more quickly as he ages. Giving anyone a 10 year deal is a bad idea in my mind I don't care who they are. The roster needs to be built up from within then you can start adding some big free agent pieces. We dont have much to work with right now from a hitting standpoint.

Spotted Theo Epstein on Rush Street. He seemed very happy walking down street. Could a press conference be soon?? #Cubs

How come? Say we have Jackson and Castro slated as our 1-2 for the foreseeable future. Fielder hitting 4th. That gives us a very solid foundation to build on. Maybe Aramis signs, maybe not. After 2012, there will be another 40+ mil to spend. If Epstein is in the fold, and has a nice long talk with Fielder or Pujols about the direction they plan on going, they may very well prefer to be a cornerstone.
