but why would you post something that makes no sense

It says that if Epstein is indeed granted permission to talk with the Cubs, the Red Sox are all but telling him to go. Hey, maybe it's not relevant to you, but I thought it was an interesting take on the situation by Lynch. And yes, we know it's all speculation.

Posted

i posted above a quote from Lynch (a Boston reporter) saying the red sox might ask for compensation for allowing the cubs just to talk to theo.

the quote that he posted from sosh is based on the Lynch report and says that Lynch speculated that theo wouldn't accept the interview under those circumstances (the cubs paying compensation just to talk with him) if theo thought that he was getting pushed out regardless.

this also has led to much spec on sosh about the cubs going for a handshake arrangement with theo, having an interim gm type for the next year and picking up theo after his contract expires. don't see Ricketts going that way myself, though.

If Theo wants the president title, and Cherington is a young genius and his buddy why not go for the package deal of Theo, Francona, and Cherington (pres, manager, gm)?

I've heard Francona and Theo linked but nobody has speculated about all three coming to the Cubs.

To anyone who follows Bruce Miles on Twitter, his latest is a link to an article that suggests that The Red Sox could very well ask for top prospects like Brett Jackson, Vitters, McNutt, and Szczur(not all 4) as compensation for Epstein. Theees no way in hell The Cubs can justify doing that, especially considering that a great deal of The Red Sox success during the Epstein era was due to their player decelopement an d giving up any of our top guys would be foolish for a GM no matter who. If they want financial compensation, that's fine. If they want somemyoung fringe prospects or guys like Jay Jackson or Alberto Cabrera that's OK too, but no way that we can give up any of our top prospects.

If it were to come down to that, I'd just as soon go with an interim and wait til next year for Epsteins contract to end, in which case they may as well have just kept Hendry around. It's not like his firing accomplished anything.

I would assume the Red Sox would keep Cherington to take over at GM.

As I've posted before, Epstein (or Beane, Friedman, Cashman) aren't worth giving up much or anything as long as Cherington, Hahn, or the guy from the Braves are available for free.

Meh if they want Vitters they can have him.

And WSR, firing Hendry did accomplish something...it rid the Cubs of Jim Hendry.

Stop suggesting this insane idea. It's not going to happen.

I was going to say something along the lines of "lol vitters" or "vitter sucks" but he did show some improvement this year (~100 points in OPS from his time in AA last year) and he's still only 22. Maybe he'll pan out after all.

Probably not, though.

Rogers speculating on compensation.

The funny thing about this is I'd happily give up some of these players. Marmol? Sure. Byrd? lol.

Here's a question for Cubs Nation. How badly do you want Theo Epstein?

Do you want him enough to take on another case of damaged goods? Do you want him badly enough to lose a top tier catcher? Maybe a quality reliever?

On the Red Sox to-do list:

•The need to part with free-agent bust John Lackey? He was 12-12 with a 6.41 ERA and destroyed his image by playing Loretta Lynn hardball — D-I-V-O-R-C-E — while his wife was healing from breast cancer. He has three years and $45.75 million left on his contract.

Lackey would be your classic Cubs misfit but they do need pitching and a move to the NL could help him. The Cubs could ask the Red Sox to take Carlos Zambrano in the deal, which cuts the risk in the deal from three years to two, or try to steer the conversation to Daisuke Matsuzaka. He has only one year left on his contract, but he has a full no-trade clause.

•The need a legitimate catcher: Jarrod Saltalamacchia played a starring role in the 7-20 September collapse, and Jason Varitek is in the third catcher stage of his career. The Red Sox love Ryan Lavarnway but don't know if he can catch every day. Geo Soto would be a big addition or the Cubs could send along one of two catching prospects, Welington Castillo or Steve Clevenger, depending on Boston's evaluation of them.

•The need for a right fielder: Marlon Byrd is expendable for the rebuilding Cubs. He was playing right when he saved the 2010 All-Star Game for the NL. The Red Sox even might ask for Brett Jackson, but would they really expect the Cubs to give up their top prospect?

•The need for bullpen help: Jonathan Papelbon seems likely to be re-signed, but setup man Daniel Bard could be headed for the rotation. Carlos Marmol would be a high-value addition, and because he's signed through 2013 he can't complain too loudly if he sets up Papelbon. Lefty Sean Marshall and right-hander Jeff Samardzija offer less dramatic options.

•The need for pitching prospects: This is the No. 1 weakness of the Cubs' system, so there isn't much to pick from. That doesn't mean the Red Sox won't ask for Andrew Cashner, Trey McNutt or a sleeper arm their scouts have identified.

Obviously, no thanks on Cashner, Jackson, and any other worthwhile prospects.

Don't look now, but Dayton Moore may be putting together a team that's going to be able to compete. There's a whole lot of cheap young talent coming through KC the next couple years... His FA signings haven't been the greatest, but they haven't been awful either. We all may have written him off a bit too soon.

Tim said the same thing earlier and as I said to him, you may be right but Moore already did everything he could to ruin Alex Gordon. They've got a ton of really good prospects, but Moore has also shown a weird fascination with gritty vets like Podsednik, Betancourt, Jacobs, and others. His recent Greinke trade didn't help him in my eyes as there's some value in that deal (a few of the players are thought of highly), but it appears he didn't get much upside in the deal.

I would not give up any top prospects like McNutt, Szczur, or Jackson. Vitters either. We really shouldn't have to give up any players, certainly not top prospects. As highly as Ricketts values the farm system, I doubt he'd give up guys like that anyway. If they want someone like Colvin, J Jackson, Barney, Coleman, DeWitt, Russell, or Campana they can have them, or even Byrd, Soriano, or Wells.

If they want to move on to a new era, they go with Cherington and let Epstein explore other options. If they don't, then they keep Epstein. I would take Lackey, and a good portion of his contract. He's never pitched in the NL, so that could be to our advantage. I'd definitely take Crawford, but I don't think they're quite ready to give up on him.

Because if Boston lets us talk to Epstein, it's because they're promoting Cherington to GM. They won't let us get both.

Or they could, you know, just let us pillage their entire organization.

Great reference gramps.

I like Castillo more than most, and think compensation for any of the GMs being mentioned is a joke...but sure.

No on Jackson. Trading Byrd leaves us kind of screwed for next year unless we can dump Z or Soriano's contract.

Carlos Marmol would be a high-value addition, and because he's signed through 2013 he can't complain too loudly if he sets up Papelbon. Less dramatic means more dramatic?

Just no.

The possibilities are endless. If the Red Sox grant permission, it would be for a short window, and they would try to pry some players or draft picks from the Cubs.

How is it possible that these guys are unaware of the fact that you can't trade draft picks in baseball?

You act like he's been writing about baseball for 30 years or something.

Here's a new wrinkle we hadn't heard...

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/ct-spt-1005-gm-cubs-chicago--20111005,0,1969311.story

If he were to come to Chicago, it's likely he would bring former Red Sox manager Terry Francona with him.

We've heard it speculated before but we haven't really heard that it's likely.

I think it's most likely if we land either Cherington or Epstein that Francona will be the manager. I found an interview with Cherington where he was asked about his day to day routine. He said everyone in the front office takes turns traveling with the team on road trips, and that part of the job was meeting with Francona daily to get a pulse of the lockerroom and listen to his input and concerns. If you have that kind of day to day personal working relationship with someone over the course of years, and it's proven to be a successful relationship, it's hard to imagine you wouldn't replicate it if the situation were available at your next job, rather than taking a shot in the dark on some new person that you have no history with and hoping it works out for the best. It just removes one more potential risk out of the equation.

Some of the Sawx fans are tearing Epstein apart in the comments. Come where you're loved Theo!!

One can only hope that the smug Epstein and his gaggle of geeks be swept aside so that some real house-cleaning may ensue.

Saying that Epstein was in any way responsible for the Sox winning in 2004 is like saying that the guy who provided the Jack Daniels to Millar and Co. prior to Game 7 of the ALCS was responsible for the win.

At this point, I don't care if the Cubs offer a whiffle bat and a bag of balls for Theo....don't go away mad, just go away!!!

"I'll gladly say ho hum, wait til next year if they'll return ticket and concession prices to 1980 levels."

Can we start a bidding war to see who can win the chance to apply the first kick of the boot to Theo as he's walking towards the door?

I'd give up Byrd or Marmol, although this whole compensation thing is pretty stupid. If Epstein can't find cheap replacements for those guys' production, I wouldn't want him to be GM anyways.
