“I won’t throw my veterans, who have been battling all year, [on the bench],’’ Quade said. “Especially Reed [Johnson] — what a year he’s had — and say, ‘You’re going to sit down for a week.’ No. .  .  . And these kids will get their at-bats and opportunities, but to me it’s not just, ‘Here it is, go get it and the rest of these guys can watch you play.’ ’’

Reed [expletive] Johnson? Seriously? I don't think Colvin will be much more than a 4th OF in his career, but there's more to be gained from playing him every day than Reed Johnson.

Time for Hendry to make a waiver deal to get Reed's veteran ass out of the way.

Cubs are buried deep in the standings in mid-August. This is Quade's time to shine. The only way to do that is with wins.

Wins that will be led by the mighty Reed Johnson!

Say what you want about Reed Johnson, he has had a great season in limited playing time. He must have at least some value as a 4th outfielder for a contending team.

i had no idea what to expect from quade going into this season, but i didn't think he could be this bad. yikes.

I wasn't particularly enthused with the signing, but he said absolutely everything I could have ever wanted to hear in the preseason.

And then he's gone out and done everything wrong during the season itself.

I love the Cubs, but I sure don't love the management.

Quade's not stupid. He knows that he is going to get fired after the season, so winning a few extra games looks better for him. Hendry should have promised him a spot in the organization if he let the kids play the rest of the way.

If quade won't do what's right for the organization now that the season is in the dumps because he wants to milk 5 more wins for his resume, then there's no reason to keep him any longer. Fire him now; don't wait till the fall.

Disappointing, but not at all surprising. I can't think of too many managers who wouldn't do the same damn thing in this situation. When a team is bad almost any MLB manager is going to be awful. And no, that's a defense of Quade; that's a condemnation of most MLB managers.

Sounds a lot like Dusty's last season in Chicago.

We can only hope this is Quade's last as well.

The difference being that outside of Johnson, which vets are blocking anybody?

I don't need to see any more of Campana to know that he's not anything more than he's been. I suppose it would be good to see what some of the 2nd base options are but that won't really happen until Sept. anyway.

This situation is different than not playing Choi because Fred McGriff is chasing some meaningless milestone.

It will be interesting to see what happens if BJax keeps knocking on the door, especially once rosters expand. Now would be a really convenient time for one of those Soriano hamstring pulls or something.

As for second base, though he hasn't been bad, I don't really want to see much more of Baker this year. Between Barney (barely), Flaherty, and DJ, we've got enough kids who deserve/need a second look.

And let's face it; Johnson's not REALLY blocking anyone.

Yes, I'd rather see Colvin get more time. But let's be realistic.

i doubt quade is back. hendry probably will be, but quade will be one of the guys who takes the fall for the nightmare season. everybody wants changes, and he's an easy guy to get rid of. an unknown guy with no experience who was basically getting a one year tryout this season. now we know he sucks and can move on.

Quade reminds me of a VP in my company: says some cool things before the bullets start flying, but when push comes to shove, his actions don't back up the talk. Both guys need to be put out to pasture.
