The whole point of trading Fukudome was trading Fukudome. Personally, I think they just need to get on with it and promote Jackson for CF and move Byrd to RF, because thats the likely configuration next year.

Paul Sullivan tweeted that Cashner threw from the mound again today and was feeling good. Cashner says 3 weeks, Cubs are thinking September. I am sure it would be good for Cashner to pitch again this year for his mental well-being, but does it make sense in a lost season? I guess it would be easier to give him innings when the outcome of the game is meaningless from the Cubs standpoint.

Call him up in September when the rosters expand. Bring up another reliever or two. Let Cashner start and keep him on a strict count. Regarding the winter leagues, I think it would be a good idea provided there are limits on his pitches and appearances.

Why wasn't Colvin playing against a RHP yesterday? That's the question that I would like answered.

As for Cashner, I'm perfectly content with him pitching out of the bullpen when he comes back in September. I also don't have a problem with him pitching in the winter leagues as long as he's on an extremely strict pitch count.

If the idea is to get him back starting, I do not want to see him in the winter leagues. I feel like there's a greater risk of stupid use and poor monitoring. I'd rather see him work within the organization to strengthen his arm and be prepared to start fresh in the spring. Let him gradually expand his innings and then give him some extended spring training before starting the season in a piggyback situation in the minors.

If he's going to be a reliever, go ahead and send him to the winter leagues to get some real work in and then maybe he's a go for the start of next season.
