By Ben Nicholson-Smith [July 19, 2011 at 4:58pm CST]

The Giants acquired Jeff Keppinger from the Astros for right-handed pitchers Henry Sosa and Jason Stoffel, according to Alyson Footer of the Astros (on Twitter). The Astros called Jose Altuve up to the Major Leagues in a related move.

A good idea. Serves as a nice roundup for small trades so we don't have a million threads with three responses.

Not a bad trade for the Giants. Keppinger can hit and can play all over the infield. Nothing special though. Better as a backup than a starter.

Question is, does this set the bar for a deal involving Jeff Baker?

I dont know about Keppinger, but Baker still has a year or so under team control, so that could make his value a bit higher, but if Keppinger does as well, then yeah, Id say thats the type of package wed get for Baker. Not sure if its worth it depending on the prospects.

Tigers acquired 3B Wilson Betemit from the Royals for LHP Antonio Cruz and C Julio Rodriguez.

Betemit also drew interest from the Brewers and Angels, but the Tigers made the most aggressive play for the 29-year-old corner infielder and are expected to make him their regular starting third baseman. Betemit has registered a cool .281/.341/.409 batting line this year and will take on more fantasy value now that everyday playing time will be coming his way.

Neither minor leaguer is a top prospect but both are young with potential and Cruz has posted some nice numbers. More teams see Baker as a backup as opposed to Betemit, but I guess this could be another kind of package we might be looking at if we trade him.

I know its not a trade but

Tigers Designate Brandon Inge For Assignment

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [July 20 at 9:36pm CST]

The longest tenured Tiger may soon be suiting up for the Toledo Mud Hens. The Tigers designated Brandon Inge for assignment, according to MLB.com's Jason Beck (on Twitter). The veteran will accept an assignment to Triple-A, assuming he clears waivers, according to Beck.

Inge, 34, hit .177/.242/.242 in 239 plate appearances this year after signing a two-year, $11.5MM deal with Detroit last offseason. In need of more offense at the hot corner, the Tigers acquired Wilson Betemit earlier today. Shortly before picking up ten and five rights, Inge told me he would like to spend his entire career in Detroit.

Inge has a bit of power, but after looking at his career stats, I didnt realise how truely awful he was.

Looks like BJ Upton is going to be dealt very shortly. He was pulled out of tonight's game in the 8th inning, while Desmond Jennings was just promoted.

Talk about a guy who didn't live up to the hype. When he was a rookie that guy was supposed to be the 2nd coming.

Did people still think he could play SS at that point?

Blue Jays Close To Deal For Edwin Jackson

By Tim Dierkes [July 27 at 9:21am CST]

The White Sox are in serious talks for a deal that would send starter Edwin Jackson and third baseman Mark Teahen to the Blue Jays for reliever Jason Frasor and a prospect, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. Rosenthal's colleague Jon Paul Morosi says this deal is close and money could be involved. The rumor was first reported ten hours ago on Twitter by a fellow named Doug Seyller.

The Jays' motivation for renting Jackson for two months and taking on a bad contract in Teahen is unclear, unless the prospect is of high quality. There doesn't appear to be a draft pick angle, as both Jackson and Frasor project as Type Bs. Perhaps Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos is considering flipping Jackson to a contender.

The White Sox were known to be seeking bullpen help, and Frasor has a club option for next year. But maybe Kenny Williams' goal is to shed the $9.7MM left on the contracts of Jackson and Teahen. Sox pitchers John Danks and Gavin Floyd are also on the market, according to Rosenthal. The White Sox are currently 4.5 games out in the AL Central with another game against the Tigers tonight.

No this I find somewhat baffling. If the Blue Jays were contenders, it would be a good deal. If Edwin Jackson were not a rent a player, it would makes sense. The Jays could get better value as far as prospects go for Frasor. The Sox could get better value for Jackson. Im just not getting this one on either side.

It looks like it's a done deal, Frasor for Jackson and Teahan. Supposedly, Jackson is getting flipped to the Cardinals for Rasmus. I don't know any other parameters, but this is a great series of events for the Jays if true.

The Astros are telling some teams Clint Barmes is not available

what the [expletive]???

Yeah, we'll sell our best player, but don't even ask us about our dime-a-dozen middle infielder! We're building around that guy.
