Lou's problem dressing himself was that he wore his uniforms way too tight for how sloppy he is. If he had brought back the classic baggy look it would have been fine.

Probably the managers, since they're still outside in the dugout.

most games are in the evening, and there are games played in september, april and may. really there are three months of games in weather that's sometimes hot, assuming that you're playing outdoors and not on the west coast. like today's game time temperature was 73 degrees, i'm pretty sure quade could survive this one while wearing a suit.

What, you're some kind of weather expert now?

I'm not sure I follow this "It would look stupid" idea for a suit at a ballpark. From what I can recall, suits were worn to the park regularly in the past.

Yes, but times change. Wouldn't you find it weird to see some guy in the bleachers in a suit and brand new bowler hat cheering his ass off just like the dude in t-shirt and shorts next to him?

That's because it was the fashion of the time. That's just what men wore for the most part whenever they were out in public.

I'm sure Quade would be fine, being completely hairless has got to keep you a few degrees cooler.

But yeah, I've always thought the whole baseball managers wearing the unis is a bit archaic and silly- looking. Unless teams want to start bringing back player/managers, which would be awesome.

I hope I'm not the only one who remembers what a smug prick Trader Jack was in every pre & post game interview when we played the fish in '04.

I'll never forget the big [expletive] eating grin he flashed when they played the Bartman footage at the Cell during those hurricane games vs. Montreal. This guy is 1st class garbage.

I kind of always wondered why baseball was the only sport (that I can think of) where the manager and coaches wore uniforms along with the players.

I would assume it stems from how many player/managers they had back in the day. In fact, has there always been a manager role with professional baseball? I wouldn't be surprised if it just evolved out of a captain-like role from amongst the players on the team.

I'm not sure when the manager role began, but it's been around since the advent of the National League at least. The player/manager thing is the likely reason for them being in uniforms though.

I don't remember specifics, I just remember really hating the guy. My irrational hatred for the Marlins will probably never go away because of him.

Yeah I think it's pretty safe to say that it IS the reason why they wear uniforms.

fwiw, the last four player-managers were

Pete Rose 84-86

Don Kessinger - 1979

Joe Torre - 1977

Frank Robinson - 1975-1976

The last Cubs player/manager was Phil Cavaretta from 51-53.

Just checked out the rulebook.

Interestingly this is in there:

A COACH is a team member in uniform appointed by the manager to perform such

duties as the manager may designate, such as but not limited to acting as base coach.

but I haven't found anything related to a manager requiring a uniform.

In fact, the passage below could be interpreted to mean that managers do not need to be in uniform:

No person shall be allowed on the playing field during a game except players and

coaches in uniform, managers, news photographers authorized by the home team, umpires,

officers of the law in uniform and watchmen or other employees of the home club.

I dont remember the specifics, but by the end of the '03 NLCS, my hatred for the old codger was 2nd only to Beckett.

I always thought that the concept of a player/manager was pretty cool. I'm too young to really remember Rose doing it.

I dont remember seeing him doing it, but I remember having his 1987 Topps card that said 1B/MGR.
