The earlier signing date is not something we've talked about much. It'll be really interesting to see how players are handled. My guess is pitchers are really babied, tightfully so, but position players step right in immediately. Some may get in close to half a season or so, if they sign early, so that'll be fun.

I wouldn't be shocked if some pitchers don't even sign 2012 contracts so they can just rest for the rest of this season.

BA really shouldn't be getting my hopes up by talking about Gausman falling to 6.

I know one doesn't have anything to do with the other and I'm being irrational, but the talk of taking one of the projectable high-school position players makes me feel all icky.

Cubs top-10 draft picks used on high school position players since Shawon Dunston:

Derrick May (1986, No. 9 overall)

Earl Cunningham (1989, No. 8 overall)

Corey Patterson (1998, No. 3 overall)

Luis Montanez (2000, No. 3 overall)

Josh Vitters (2007, No. 3 overall)

Javier Baez (2011, No. 8 overall)

Total of 7.8 bWAR, with Vitters and Baez of course having their careers in front of them. Patterson was the only player who made anything out of themselves in the big leagues. Cunningham and Montanez were total busts, and Derrick May had an incredibly long MLB career for essentially a replacement-level player.

They did a community draft on minorleagueball today for the 1st 3 rounds. The guy picking for the Cubs took Fried at 6. Passed on Almora, Zimmer, and Giolito. At 43, took Alex Wood. A few guys going behind that pick included Weickel, Barrett Barnes, Naquin, and Nick Travieso. At 56, it was Peter O'Brien to the Cubs. A few guys picked afterwards were Carson Kelly, Agosta, Nick Williams, Mitch Nay, and Kyle Twomey. At 67, he took Wyatt Mathieson, with a few guys still out there being. Brian Johnson, Light, Ramsey, Mooneyham, Rio Ruiz, Underwood, and Kline. In the 3rd, at 101, Cubs took Patrick Wisdom. Some guys available were Rodgers, Farmer, Cody Poteet, Selman, Diekroger, and Young.

Hate passing on Zimmer/Almora for Fried. Love Wood at 43. I would prefer Rio Ruiz at 67 but that comes down to signability - Mathisen is still a very good pick.

I think I would have went with Almora at 6. Unless Giolito would sign for around slot. At 43, I really like Alex Wood too, but I still would have found it hard not to take Weickel. At 56, I think I'd have taken Mooneyham. At 67, Mathieson a very good pick. At 101, I like Wisdom, but I'd take Selman at that spot. Mine would be Almora, Weickel, Mooneyham, Mathieson, and Selman.

Yeah, there's pretty much no way I pick Fried over Almora there, and I like the idea of Ruiz later. I actually like Mooneyham or Selman (115 to the Giants) more than Wood, but I guess it can be argued that Wood is the most talented of the three.

PrincetonCubs explained his picks.

Personally, I wouldn't have gone with Fried, but I understand why he did.

Slot prices have gone up. It's about the only positive I can say for the new CBA. If you take Fried at 6, it's because he's agreed to take a slight underslot deal. The 10th pick is 2.7 mill, so maybe he agrees to 2.9 mill, because he doesn't want to run the risk of falling outside the top 10. Slot at 43 is damn near 1.2 mill. I seriously doubt Wood turns that down either, to be honest. Slot at 56 is over 900k. O'Brien, as a senior, has no leverage at all. If you take him, it's to save money for someone else later. I'd guess you offer him 500k. Mathieson would probably take an overslot to sign honestly. Slot is above 750k, maybe he'd want 1.3ish? This would get you directly back to being at your cap. Wisdom takes slot money, tad under 500k and you've still got your penalty cash of around 400k to use elsewhere. That's about how I'd see this scenario playing out for us.

Keith Law says Onelki Garcia has told teams he wants 7 mill and if he's not a 1st rounder, he won't sign. I'd say this guy is a wee bit delusional, to put it nicely.

He can go back to playing in his adult baseball league in LA then (yes, that's where he's being scouted).

ROTFL. An adult baseball league in LA...wow that's funny.

That's the guy from last year?

Yeah, Garcia is the guy who was the big rumor right before the 2011 draft for the Cubs first round pick until he was ruled ineligible for the draft.

Gammons says Astros were blown away by Correa's personal workout. If he goes 1st, all bets are off as far as who's sitting there at 6 for us.

Yeah said he's the best PR talent since Beltran. That's high praise. I hope they go for it and make Gausman/Appel more possible.

By the way, a product of the new CBA says we have to offer at least 40% of slot value to a player. This sets the bar, I suppose, for what college seniors should be expecting.

I guess everything we're thinking right now hinges on whether or not Giolito throws off a mound this week and how he looks, if he does. I honestly can't see a team ahead of us taking the risk. But if he looks good, I think we'll pull the trigger.

What happens if he is hurt, but all he needs is TJ?

Then as common as TJS has become, I still think it's too risky for us to blow the 6th pick on him with this CBA. If we weren't capped financially, I think we'd take him and not think twice.

If I'm Houston, I'm offering Appel, Buxton, and Gausman 6 mill, Correa 5 mill and Zunino 4 mill and see which one accepts first. It'd give them lots of money to overslot later on. I just don't see where giving any of those guys the full slot makes sense for them. They could probably get one of this group and a couple of other top 30ish talents as well that drop for signability reasons.
