I'm hearing from a couple of sides that Dunston is telling Cubs and vandy that he's going to college.

Too bad.

O well, can't get them all, and it's pretty clear that is wasn't for lack of effort or a lack of dollars. If a kid decides he really wants to go to school, that's his choice.

@jimcallisBA: Door No. 1. @kaseyi99: is the reason we are not hearing #Cubs signings is so much over slot, or just not going to sign? #mlbdraft

I still suck at reading Twitter copy-pastes

Callis is responding to a tweet by saying the reason we're not hearing about Cubs signings is that they're so much over slot.

I know, it just took me a few extra seconds. Thanks though.

I know how you struggle sometimes.

BeerHere - I don't think anyone is really expecting anything on our big three (Baez, Vogelbach, and Maples) until late, if they sign. Particularly Maples, who would require a significant overslot that the commissioner's office likely will force the announcement to be delayed.

As a total side note, much as I'm huge on Ben Wells, if Maples is legitimately throwing mid-90's now, and not just sporadically touching it, I'd probably rank him ahead of Wells since reports suggest his secondary stuff is more polished.

With the signing deadline of 8/15, is it reasonable to expect the announcement comes that day (assuming they sign)?

Side note: Ridiculous system that forces kids who want to play, and organizations that want to pay delay the start of the kids professional career to *potentially* save other teams a little money.

Not only will announcements come on 8/15, they'll go right up to the deadline. Vitters signed in the 11th hour and last year, Ben Wells signed pretty late in the evening.

For a guy thats going back to school DunstonJr sure does tease on his twitter a lot. Today he tweeted "It's getting closer". If your going back to school why drag it out till the signing deadline why not say hey things didnt work out with the Cubs and Im going to college.

Does anyone know if there's a list of all the first round signings from this year somewhere?

BA

Marra's a good signing. The Cubs have had a decent haul at catcher in this draft so far.

He could still be negotiating with the Cubs, or, if a deal has been signed, he legally might not be allowed to discuss the terms of the agreement, much less that he has signed, until the deal has been announced.

Well good. Then he's signed! With phrases like "right now" and "after the deadline." If you ended discussions, those aren't the words you'd use. If you've signed but can't talk about it until August 15th, you might say something like that.

Whoa ... Marra signed? That was a bit unexpected, considering Rosario was in the fold and so was Lopez. Add in the raw guys in Arizona already ... I'm surprised. Pleased, and happy, but this was almost a luxury signing.

My guess would be that he is hedging his bet until the league approves. Sounds like the Cubs are going to try to get an awful lot of signings through the Comish's office. He might balk at a few.

how can he do that? a kid wants to sign for a certain amount, the team agrees, they sign. if he doesn't approve them, can't both sides just sue MLB?
