A poster on a different board says that Taylor Scott has agreed to terms.

A poster on a different board, who also seems to have some inside connections, has suggested that Scott was something of an ugly deal. They'd thought they had a pre-arrange, then after they drafted the agent double-crossed and demanded more.

Unconfirmed as always, and general agreement is rather different from a complete signed-off or signed and approved. So reports of "agreement" and some lengthy delay before it's wrapped are compatible in my view.

According to the guy on PSD who appears to have contacts, Zych wants second round money and Scott had a prearranged deal with the Cubs, but he reneged and wants more money now. Sounded confident Zych will be in the fold, but certainly less so with Scott.

yeah, that stuff with Scott sounds sketchy for sure

It happens more frequently than you think. A friend of mine works for a scouting group. One of their clients was picked in the supplemental first round a year or two ago and had a prearranged deal with the team that drafted him. After the draft, someone got in dear old dad's ear that his son was worth even more money and that he could be signed to a bigger deal. Dad informed the team that his son would not be signing unless the team added another $500k to the signing bonus.

When the team threatened to walk away altogether, everyone shaped up and signed on the original deal's dotted line.

i liked the pick of zych but don't think he's worth second round money - he hasn't been dominant and he's a junior, so if he goes back to school and doesn't have a good year, he'll be drafted as a college senior and be lucky to get slot at wherever he's drafted.

that being said, i'm not a fan of wasting early round picks either... hopefully his demands come down a bit and they sign him for a little over slot.

Jensen said he got 4th round money to sign:

The Monterey County Herald[/url]"]Two weeks before the signing period for drafted players is up, the Cubs locked up the right-handed Jensen with a six-figure signing bonus.

"The offer was extremely good for the round I was drafted in,'' Jensen said. "My school is still paid for. My dream is to play professional baseball. If I had stayed in college, my focus would have been baseball.''

Drafted in the 26th round by the Cubs, Jensen received a signing bonus (figures were not released) similar to what much higher drafted players are offered.

"I was told the signing bonus was comparable to what a fourth round pick receives,'' said the 6-foot-1, 185-pound 20-year-old. "Most 26 round picks don't get this kind of bonus.''

4th round slot ranges from $168,300 to $240,300.

Wow. Cubs are spending. 4th round money for Jensen? I wasn't expecting that. Here's hoping it wasn't a case of a couple guys likely not signing, so they decided to give him more money. I am a big fan, but 4th round money seems surprising.

As for Zych, I'm sort of in a, if he signs, okay. If not, I'm not worrying too much about it. He's got velocity, but fastball's inconsistent, and his slider is average at best, if not a tick below. Definitely could get better, but with his projection being the pen, eh, just not going to bother me if we lose him. If there's the money, would love to have him.

Any confirmation on Scott's status?

This happens all the time, not as often in terms of a pre-draft deal but where the kid/adviser will put the salary demands out there and then once he is drafted, increases the demands.

Scouts hate this given the fact they either have to waste the pick or sign him to a contract to where he might not be worth what he is asking and wouldnt have drafted him based on that and their jobs are always on the line with one to two year deals and how poorly it looks to the scouting director.

$125-200 has basically been slot for any HS/JC/sophomore type pick almost anywhere in the draft, seems to me. My understanding is that kurcz, Fitzgerald, Hartman, Beeler, all those kinds of guys get that. I understand perhaps the "listings" include college value, and they perhaps get less in actual dollars. Whereas Jensen sounds like he's claiming "actual" 4th round money, plus college besides. But I think $175 isn't that surprising. I admit I'm almost surprised he signed for that little.

I'd probably overrated him, but to me his scouting reports had sounded considerably more promising that with Jaques.

When is the signing deadline anyway? This thread may be the last chance for any good news on this awful season.

Sadly, this is the first thread I've been checking every day for a while now.

Thats when you know you've had a bad season...

According to this link, Ricky Jacquez has not fared too well in the California Collegiate League:

6/11- 6.2IP 3H 5ER 4K/6BB 105 pitches

6/18- 5.1IP 8H 5R (4ER) 4K/4BB 97 pitches

6/24- 4.1IP 7H 6R (3ER) 4K/2BB 86 pitches

7/6- 2.2IP 2H 2ER 4K/1BB 54 pitches

I wonder what this will do for our chances of coming to an agreement with him.

It looks like Jacquez has made some adjustments and is pitching better this summer, his overall record is 2-2 with a 4.70 ERA. He's got 37 K/18 BB in 38.1IP.

By the end of next year the Cubs will have a top 5 farm system. Just calling it now.

None of this information has been confirmed, either. We need to be cautious.

However, between this draft, the potential 2012 top 5 draft pick, the emergence of legitimately intriguing Latin American position prospects in the DSL and AZL, and the possibility that one of the high ceiling arms in Peoria/Boise has a breakout season next year, there is reason for optimism for this farm system going forward.

Don't forget potential breakouts from guys who didn't break out (or completely break out) in 2011 like McNutt, Simpson, Jae Hoon Ha, and Matt Szczur.

I like the Schlect and Jensen confirmed signings. DeVoss also has been pretty exciting for Boise.

I might go as far as to call Szczurs season a breakout. He was steller for Peoria. and he seems to be coming around for Daytona. McNutt had his breakout last year, and was on rout to continuing it until he was sidelined.

man given what BA wrote about schlecht during the draft, sure sounds like he's a guy who is valued more by cubs' scouts than by most talent evaluators.

Pretty accurate.

I think after the draft, in one of the articles Schlecht said teams had been telling him in the 5th-8th round range. May be a lie; might be only Cubs scouts telling him that; or might be three scouts from teams that like him and the other 27 teams aren't telling him they think he's a 35th round talent. So there are always questions about these kinds of comments from kids.

But it may also be true.

Always a range of opinions between different scouts.
