So, what's people's general take on the draft so far? I was commenting on it in another blog, and I thought it'd be curious to see what people thought of it. Overall, I don't know if I think this is a great draft, but I think it is a good draft for the system, if that makes sense. It potentially addresses power needs, and fills in some positional questions, which balances out the arm heavy draft from last year.

I like it but don't love it. Of course, snagging a few HS guys and bribing them away from college (a la McNutt) could change the looks of that considerably.

Kinda surprised to see us grabbing so many catchers.

I'd like to see one more high ceiling pitcher added. If that happens I'll be very pleased with this draft.

Depends on who we sign obviously, but if we get Baez, Vogelbach, DeVoss, Zych, and 5 of the next 6 guys, we'll have done very well early. As far as Dunston and Maples, I'd love it if we got them. It'd show we're serious about the farm rebuild. Technically speaking though, we got some solid power out of Baez and Vogelbach. Took a bigtime reliever who can move quick in Zych, got another very solid upside guy in Dunston and a boom or bust type guy in Maples.(ace or possible non-starter). Damn good draft, depending on who we sign basically.

Thanks, guys. I already posted Maples. The rest will come slowly. Please keep posting names and school/state if possible and I'll keep posting them as I can. I'm guessing a few of this kids won't sign, judging by their reports. Even the Red Sox don't sign all the big bonus requestors.

Dunston was the 16th best prospect in Nor Cal:

Shawon Dunston Jr.'s father was the No. 1 overall pick in the 1982 draft, played 18 years in the big leagues and is a special assistant for the Giants. While the elder Dunston was drafted out of high school, however, most scouts believe his son would be better off going to Vanderbilt, where he's a key recruit. Dunston has a slender, 6-foot-2, 175-pound frame, and it's obvious that his best baseball is in front of him, and he's surprisingly raw. He is an above-average runner, which helps both on the bases and in center field. Unlike his father, he swings from the left side of the plate. As Dunston fills out, he could grow into gap power and be an average hitter. Scouts love his speed, passion for the game and bloodlines, but they may not want to buy him out of school at this point.

I'm not really. I figure Rosario is going to spend next year at Arizona or Boise. Lopez is probably just an orgaizational guy, but we need some of those guys too. And the kid from Canada, without knowing anything at all about him, I'll say we don't sign him.

well, the talent level at the position in the system is somewhat iffy. I think we've all debated the talent levels of Gibbs/Clevenger/Castillo/Flores for awhile. Considering how few catchers actually make it up, it's probably worth it to get a few guys in there. I can't think of any noticeable catching talents in DSL right now (doesn't mean they can't develop/sign some guys). DeJesus and Cabezas both show promise, and probably only one of them will likely be in XST next year. This helps replenish the depth charts (particularly since one of Clevenger/Castillo should, knock on wood, be in the bigs next year).

wouldn't be surprised if we sign the Canadian kid. don't know anything personally, but I've heard before that Wilken and Co. are well-connected up there, so I don't know if they'd draft him without having a feeling that something could be done. Not sure what college he's committed to, though.

Guys like Wells and McNutt were taken pretty late, so I don't think it's too late for Wilken to add some good pitching tomorrow.

Wells wasn't late. Struck and Beeler, along with McNutt, have been our key late round over-slots from the last few years that are doing well in the minors right now.

Per BA, Lindgren is the 22nd best prospect in Mississippi but got no write up.

Whitenack wasn't late. Off the top, 8th round, I think.

I think he's referring to Randy Wells who went in the 38th round.

Matt Stities just went. I remember we offered him solid overslot money and he turned it down. Good luck getting more than that this time around.

Whitenack was an 8th rounder, McNutt a 32nd, Struck a 39th and Beeler a 41st.
