I never understand why people bring the idea of the Cubs selling early. They're not going to trade anyone major until near the deadline unless a great deal is dumped in their laps, and that's if they sell at all. This division is, for better or for worse, crappy enough that Cashner and Wells coming back and being decent that they could technically be competitive long enough that the front office refuses to "quit" by selling.

You are probably correct, but I really don't see a scenario where this team scores a ton of runs consistently. I do believe that their pitching will improve, and I sure hope they can correct the defencive lapses. That offence though, is going to have its struggles unless they add a big bat in the middle of the lineup.

Eh, Pena's not likely to stay this cold. Even as bad/unlucky as he was last year he still hit for plenty of power. Sure, there's a chance that he has some lingering issue from last year given that his last month was by far his worst, but hopefully he'll likely rebound. If he does then the Cubs have a decent heart of the order to work with between him, Aramis and Soto what guys like Baker, Barney, Castro and Fukudome have shown they can do to get on base. But then you have the issue of Quade, who seems to be convinced that none of those 3 can or should hit #3.

I don't know.

I don't see any reason to really be optimistic about this team.

OK, the division sucks. Fine.

I guess that's it. The division winner might well be a sucky team, so everyone will be in it.

Big deal. It's still very likely a crappy season for us, AND the division winner.

I hope you're right about Pena, but he has had plenty of opportunities for the Cubs, and has just been plain awful. If indeed things even out over the season, and he reaches his "normal" level...

I don't know, he just does not impress me all that much so far...

Another walk. Why is it that Cubs pitchers walk so many? I don't get it. Are they just that bad?

Rothschild was under appreciated by the masses. With that said, they're obviously not as horrid as they've shown so far.

Seemed like they also walked a lot of guys when Rothschild was around.

CUBS are on a pace to walk 662 batters this year, compared to...........

         2006 2007 2008 2009 2010
BB 687 573 556 586 605

they did walk a lot of guys when rothschild was here, but i think that's because they had a lot of power arms. the cubs have always had more power arms than pitch-to-contact guys.

I think you might have pulled the wrong walks number Fred. Those look like the walks the Cubs took not the walks allowed.

...yeah I was going to say those numbers are the complete opposite of what I thought they would have been..

huh how about that - cubs good = cubs offense drawing walks. cubs bad = cubs offense hacking away and not drawing walks.

the figures in 2005 and 2006 looked really low to me and sure enough, they were. 2005 we were at the bottom, 12 behind the giants. 2006 was even worse - we walked fewer times than every NL team, 64 fewer than the next-lowest team (pirates) and then almost 100 behind the team third from the bottom (giants).

maybe someone in the cubs organization should catch onto the fact that getting on base is good.

More entertaining than this game is Al Yellon and Buster Olney engaged in a Twitter slapfight for the last hour or so.

Cubs have the worst run differential in the NL and the second worst in the majors.
