Baker is probably about equal to Barney against righties on offense, and a bit worse on defense. DeWitt is a bit more impressive on offense, but is significantly worse on defense. About the only real guy in the system that might represent an immediate upgrade is Marquez Smith, and that's if and only if his defense at 2B isn't atrocious. Given his extremely limited playing time, I'm betting it is.

So you really think Barney is our best option at 2B right now, or are you just playing devil's advocate? I am mostly upset that they brought him up at all to start the season and especially upset he is hitting second.

Barney was going to be on this team at the start of the season regardless. He's the only person we've got capable of backing up Castro at SS. We could have went to Augie Ojeda, but I think everybody can agree that really doesn't seem like an upgrade.

As to the question of whether I think Barney is our best option at 2B, I'm willing to say I don't know. I honestly don't see any one of Barney/Baker/DeWitt as being obviously better than the others. I'll let the Cubs try to sort it out, knowing that the difference between the best of the three and the worst of the three is probably less than a single win over a full season.

I'm not happy he's batting 2nd though. If you're gonna go with a guy just because of his glove, you don't bat him at the top of the order.

Since Toronto is basically already out of it, can we just trade for Aaron Hill now and call it good? They can have Barney, Baker and DeWitt.

I would love to have Aaron Hill.

If some of these ground balls (that one was hit hard) would go at people, Garza would be pitching a great game.

Agreed and we could probably get at least another, if not 2 more innings, out of him. Instead he is likely done now.
