He isn't guaranteed that 3rd year, and you're selling him way short.

beef welington had a game-winning rbi single in the 10th inning... he's hitting over .700 with an ops over 1.700.

koyie hill's ops is what i weighed when i was about 15.

But how valuable is Castillo going to be playing once a week? No matter how good a hitter, it is rare that they use a backup catcher to pinch hit unless its extra innings. Hes better off getting everyday PT in Iowa. Max Ramirez is the guy to keep around.

If he keeps playing like this I would have no problem starting him and trading Soto. For the record, I don't think he will and I still love Soto.

I'm pretty sure sexual favors are the only thing left that Castillo can do to improve his chances for backup catcher.
Or hiring Jeff Gillooly to take out Hill.

Even WSR realizes that Castillo being the backup is a waste if he's actually any good.

Is he comparable to Hill defensively? I'm assuming Max Ramirez is NOT.

It's pretty much moot how Castillo's defense compares to Hill's (unless he's just wretched behind the plate, and he's not) if he can actually produce enough offensive output to be a starter. You'll want him starting regularly in the minors instead of just sitting on the bench spelling Soto.

Castillo's weakness evidently is in calling a game. He has a strong arm, albeit not necessarily accurate all the time. But, in both cases, repetition can be something that helps out here. Using Koyie Hill is certainly not ideal, but the pitchers seem to swear by him and if it keeps them happy, I'm all for it, especially with the idea being floated around that Soto is going to catch a TON of games, if he's healthy.

The Cubs appear to look at Castillo as a potential longterm starter and not as a backup, so getting him fulltime PT makes a hell of alot of sense. If he can translate himself into a .260-.270ish hitter with 15-20 homer pop AND plays decent defense with calling a good game as well, then maybe that even allows us the luxury of trading Geo for some other need, while his value is presumably at his highest. Not to mention, saving more money to allow us a Pujols, Fielder, etc type guy and maybe more........

The game is on MLBN today and Cashner is starting. If he has a good start today you have to think he would lock up the 5th starter spot, if he already hasn't...
