I say this thread shou survive and thrive until someone even close to as good comes out of the Cubs system again.

Are we strictly talking pitchers? Otherwise it should've been locked before it started.

Castro hasn't had a season near as good as prior was in '03

He will and he's already come out of the system.

Hopefully, but that was a pretty amazing year. I hope you are right.

Castro needs a season close to something like 170 OPS+ or 7.6 WAR (fangraphs WAR)... That's gonna be one HECK of a season if Castro get close to or beat that. Castro last year was 112 OPS+ and 3.4 WAR.

Yeah, just for comparison, Tulowitzki's bWAR the last three years was 6.3, 5.4 and 5.8 and that was with a .900+ OPS each of the three years and at least a 1.1 WAR from defense. Prior's 2003 bWAR was 6.2. Tulowitzki's fWAR those same years was 5.7, 6.5 and 6.3 while Prior's in 2003 was 7.6.

So the offense is going to have to pick up and the defense is going to need a major turnaround. Obviously he's still very young so it could happen but he's not a lock by any means.

Love SSR's optimism though.

The Red Sox signed 31-year-old Mark Prior to a minor league deal after watching him throw in Fort Myers for a few weeks. He is coming off groin surgery.

Prior has not pitched in the majors since 2006 when he was with the Cubs. He got in 11 minor league games for the Yankees last season and pitched well before injuries ended that comeback attempt.

This is a virtually no-cost signing for the Red Sox.

Yeah, there's a thread in transactions about this.

The Red Sox have promoted Mark Prior to Triple-A Pawtucket.

Prior signed a minor league deal with the Red Sox earlier this month. Rob Bradford of WEEI.com writes that the 31-year-old right-hander was clocked between 90-92 mph with his fastball in extended spring training and has shown "good improvement" with his curveball over the past month. He hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2006 due to shoulder problems, but he's trying to make his way back as a reliever.

Since Bowden didn't work out, any chance we can convince the Red Sox to send this Prior guy our way?

WSR: I'd take a flyer on him

I just want to see the guy get back to the majors and be healthy. Where he plays or how much he dominates doesn't make a big difference to me. Just not St Louis or Miami.

This is awesome.

Still sad that he has lost so much velocity but it sure beats the low 80's or wherever he was the last time he pitched for us.

I didn't realize that he had the same surgery that Santana had. It's really interesting how they're figuring out new ways to improve shoulder all the time. When I had my labrum fixed in 1997, they had to cut me open and when I had a second surgery in 2002 they had progressed to the point they were just scoping it to repair a torn labrum.

90-92 isn't too far off from where he used to be. Looks like he threw 92-93 on average with his fastball according to fangraphs.

I just hope that he'll pitch another 7-9 years as a shut down reliever. That would be awesome.

yeah, 90-92 was about where he pitched at in chicago. his 4-seamer would top out around 94, maybe 95, and his 2-seamer was anywhere from 89-92.

i still hope he ends up starting again.

I thought he pitched faster then that, consistently around 96. His pitch speed rivaled Kerry's iirc.

Rooting for him. RT @PeteAbe: Mark Prior struck out five of the seven batters he faced for Pawtucket. 28 pitches, 21 strikes #RedSox

With the Red Sox issues in the bullpen and rotation I have to imagine if he keeps this up he should be in consideration for a call up relatively soon.
