Luis Castillo was released today. Think the Cubs take a chance?

I'd bet we've had scouts keeping an eye on him the last couple weeks. If we really are that down on DeWitt, he's almost certainly a better option than just handing the job to Baker.

Quade seems to realize Baker is much better option vs leftys than playing everyday. I wouldnt be opposed to a Baker/Castillo platoon. Does DeWitt still have options?

Quick copy-paste job from The Cub Reporter

MINOR LEAGUE OPTION STATUS (SPRING TRAINING 2011):

Players who have accrued at least five years of MLB Service Time can decline an Optional Assignment to the minors, even if they have options left. The following players will have accrued less than five years of MLB Service Time through the 2010 season. A player who has accrued at least three years of MLB Service Time (Baker, Gorzelanny, A. Guzman, K. Hill, and Soto) or who has been outrighted to the minors previously in his career (Diamond and Wells) can decline an outright assignment and opt for free-agency instead

NOTE: Carlos Marmol and Sean Marshall have to clear Optional Assignment Waivers before they can be optioned to the minors, Blake DeWitt, Kosuke Fukudome, and Randy Wells would have to clear Optional Assignment Waivers before they can be optioned to the minors beginning on 3-31-2011, and Thomas Diamond would have to clear Optional Assignment Waivers before he can be optioned to the minors beginning on 4-17-2011.

NO MINOR LEAGUE OPTIONS LEFT in 2011:

Jeff Baker (also can decline Outright Assignment)

Sam Fuld

Tom Gorzelanny (also can decline Outright Assignment)

Jeff Gray

Angel Guzman (also can decline Outright Assignment)

Koyie Hill (also can decline Outright Assignment)

Micah Hoffpauir

Jeff Samardzija

Geovany Soto

ONE MINOR LEAGUE OPTION LEFT in 2011:

Mitch Atkins

Justin Berg

Blake DeWitt

Thomas Diamond (can decline Outright Assignment)

Sean Marshall (can decline Outright Assignment)

Carlos Marmol (can decline Outright Assignment)

Marcos Mateo

Jeff Stevens

Randy Wells (can decline Outright Assignment)

TWO MINOR LEAGUE OPTIONS LEFT in 2010:

James Adduci

Welington Castillo

John Gaub

Blake Parker

Brian Schlitter

THREE MINOR LEAGUE OPTIONS LEFT in 2011:

Darwin Barney

Esmailin Caridad

Andrew Cashner

Starlin Castro

Casey Coleman

Tyler Colvin

Rafael Dolis (see NOTE)

Kosuke Fukudome (can decline Trade or Outright Assignment, and probably has the right to decline an Optional Assignment, too)

Scott Maine

James Russell

NOTE: Dolis has used one minor league option, but he has three options remaining because he is eligible for a 4th minor league option, as long as it is used prior to the 2014 season.

Obviously not all of those matter anymore...

Anyway, what I get from that is that DeWitt has an option left but if we try to use it during the season we'd have to expose him to waivers.

So basically Barney is the one with the most options, but hes also the only backup to Castro at SS.

Yeah. He can ride the bus to and from Iowa all season long, but it's pretty likely he gets to spend the vast majority of the year with the big league club just because he's the only viable backup.

I was willing to go into this season with a platoon of Blake DeWitt and Jeff Baker at 2B. I was hoping for some continued offensive progression from DeWitt and hoping Baker would provide his usual lefty mashing while facing as few righties as possible.

Instead, it appears DeWitt has regressed offensively and defensively (and I was already a bit worried with his defense) to the point that he wont be a starter. The thought of Baker ever facing righties or Darwin Barney getting 300 PA worries the bejeezus out of me... especially in a division race that's poised to be so incredibly tight.

Aaron Hill and Kelly Johnson might be available at the deadline... but I don't know that it would be a good idea to wait that long.

I'm ready to see what it would take to acquire Michael Young.

I think he's made up with them, at least to an extent. But mainly, I want to wait it out and see if we can somehow pry Reyes away from the Mets and put him at 2B. I know Minaya is hard to deal with, but that's who I'm looking at as the biggest possible acquisition we could make this season.

Minaya is out as GM. They hired Sandy Alderson, who is pretty damn sharp. I always worry when trading against smart GMs, even though Hendry has a very good track record.

That's right, I forgot about that. May make it easier to technically make a deal with them actually, although I'd guess Sandy would want Reyes out of the NL if all things are equal. Hendry has lots of faults, but as you said, he's got a solid resume of trading at least.
