The Chicago Cubs met with Albert Pujols’ agent last night (not about Rodrigo Lopez – about which more soon), and, according to the St. Louis Post Dispatch, the Cubs made the 31-year-old first baseman an offer.

The offer, confirmed this morning through a source, is called a “qualifying bid,” which suggests only that it was more than a fake-out offer designed to rile up the Cardinals.

There were rumors yesterday that the Cubs would try to land Pujols on a short-term, high annual dollar contract (example: five years, $150 million), and it’s possible that’s the kind of offer they made.

Jon Heyman just reported that the Cubs prefer Prince Fielder to Albert Pujols, but his rationale was that the Cubs were unwilling to offer nine or ten years to a 31-year-old player. If the Cubs are limiting their offer to Pujols to a shorter term, it’s possible Pujols is the preference.

It's hilarious because if you saw that appearance, Theo was clearly just bs'ing with those guys about Lopez and was basically being a smart ass. How the hell have they all run with this Rodrigo Lopez crap?

Dallas - In what appears to be a much smaller market for free-agent slugger Prince Fielder than many expected, I have suspected all along that the Cubs eventually will be a team to jump in on him. When Dale Sveum was named manager, it provided another lure for Fielder.

Here is a report that suggests the Cubs prefer Fielder over Albert Pujols, given a choice of the two. Whether that means they will actually make a strong bid for him remains to be seen. But, one by one, it seems other possible suitors are out.

Yet, here is another report that says the Cubs have made a bid on Pujols. So, which of these reports do you believe? Perhaps the Cubs are covering both bases with the free-agent sluggers.

The refrain I often get from Brewers fans regarding Fielder is "anybody but the Cubs" so this news will certainly be disturbing to them, if it's true that Chicago will make a play for him. Perhaps if they have no shot at Pujols, they go harder after Fielder. We will see.

Think about that for a sec, Dave.

Muskat, I can understand: she works for the Cubs and I'm sure they can tell her to write whatever. She's not an actual journalist.

But Sullivan? What a moron.

Because they're poorly informed and desperate for something to write about.

Brewer fans starting to get nervous about him making the 90 mile trip to Chicago.

The comments on that article are hilarious:

Just pitch him sliders low and away and the Brewers will be fine. The more the Cubs pay for Fielder, the less they have for pitching. Go for it Cubs.

Steve Stone? Is that you?

Theo also joked about a fielder/pujols platoon, i wonder why no one took that seriously

Give Carrie time.

Yeah, Muskat is simply a team mouthpiece. Bitching about her is silly, since she's just regurgitating what she's told to say.

The rest don't have much of an excuse. Now that Bruce is behind a paywall, I don't read much of the Chicago beat reporters and columnists.

Yep, here's the clip from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch

The Chicago Cubs also engaged Lozano in talks about Pujols Monday and are believed to have made a qualifying bid. Lozano declined Monday night to address any team's status in negotiations.

Cubs president Theo Epstein attempted to deflect speculation about his team's interest in Pujols by noting that Lozano also represents free agent pitcher Rodrigo Lopez, another Cubs target. However, the Post-Dispatch confirmed early this morning that the Cubs submitted a bid for their rival's longtime offensive centerpiece.

Monday's flurry of activity contrasted what had been a relatively static situation in recent weeks. DeWitt said he remains hopeful of a successful resolution. The club chairman reiterated, "I like our team without [Pujols]. I like it a lot more with him."

I know that last line isn't about the Cubs but I had to leave it in. Getting nervous, Bill?

Ha! Another classic:

"This is worse than Favre, because the Brewers don't have a 1B prospect waiting in the wings. horrible"

Cards fans on Facebook and Twitter are already bracing themselves for life without Pujols:

"If Pujols signs with the Marlins or anyone besides STL, the Cardinals will be fine."

...oookay...

Dude don't worry, Berkman is totally gonna hold up.

My Cards fan buddy is fine with Berkman, and just wants the Pujols thing to end so they can move on and take care of the middle infield.

At which point they can sign Rollins who will also totally hold up.

There's a guy for Fox Sports Florida saying that Pujols to Miami is done.
