I would probably choose the 2006 guys as a collective just based on those four guys, but it wouldn't be an easy decision. The advantage the 2011 Cubs have is that they have most of the harder positions filled. The 2006 Cubs had a very good first and third baseman, a decent right fielder, a pretty good catcher, a very good starting pitcher and a potential very good starting pitcher, and a decent closer. The 2011 Cubs have a very good shortstop and catcher, a decent CF, a decent LF, an ok second baseman, two very good starters and two pretty good starters, a very good closer and a couple pretty good setup guys. If you don't have a whole lot of money, I'd rather mix and match using the 2006 team as the core. If you do have a lot of money to spend, the 2011 team has an easier time of improving the team quickly.

the cubs don't have to spend like drunken sailors this offseason, and the most important point is that they'd be signing one of the top handful of players in the game in pujols, not an $18m corner outfielder who's barely above average.

Why does each team only get to start with 4 players?

Seems like it would make more sense to play Pujols at 3B (at least for a few years) than 1B.

I still say break the bank and sign Pujols AND Fielder.

And let them play rock-paper-scissors over who gets to play 1B and 3B.

They can alternate games. The entertainment value of Prince playing 3B would be worth the losses.

Is it his throwing elbow that's always threatening to go out? That'd be a good reason not to put him at third.

He has played it a few games this year. I don't think anybody's being serious.

I'm dead serious. I want to see it when they take the field in the 1st.

Prince Fielder Won't Rule Out Any Team

By Tim Dierkes [June 15 at 12:20pm CST]

First baseman Prince Fielder, who is headed toward a massive free agent payday after the season, told Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times yesterday he "doesn't have any problems with any team." Fielder was answering a question about whether he'd listen to an offer from the Cubs. The Scott Boras client was quick to emphasize that his focus is on the Brewers, his current employer.

There's not much of a story here, as we rarely see an elite free agent publicly rule out teams, especially midseason. Sure, Fielder probably hates the Cubs from a competitive standpoint, but eliminating them publicly would just be bad business.

Wittenmyer doesn't think the Cubs can afford to make a huge bid for Fielder - his source says the team's debt structure all but precludes a free agent megadeal for the next two or three years. Still, the Cubs appear to have a crazy amount of payroll flexibility after the season. Even if they slash payroll from $134MM to $120MM, they'd still have almost $50MM to play with in 2012 salaries. Of course, I'm not an accountant and it's more complicated than that.

File this one under for what its worth or non story. I highly doubt that Fielder will let loyalties interfere with whoever offers him the biggest deal. Wittenmyer seems to think that The Cubs cant afford him, although Ricketts and Hendry have pretty much said otherwise. I guess we'll have to wait until November/December.

Ricketts, Hendry and Bud Selig have said the debt structure is not an issue. I'll take their word for it over Wittenmeyer and an unnamed source.

Boras will be pissed if the Cubs are not making an offer, actually he will just lie about it and claim they have already offered 8 years 200+ million.

Can anybody just write an article for Yahoo!???

Seriously...

I know Yahoo! sports articles has been just turrible for awhile... but this is just mind-boggling nowadays. Who the heck is Joshua Huffman? I also click on his name and it says that he has a marketing major plus somehow he's a Cubs and Packers fan.
