Just throwing some numbers out there...if Pujols does hit the market next season, would you be comfortable offering him 8 years, 250 million?

Seeing as you've had a bunch of people in here talking about how they'd have little problem seeing the Cubs give him 10/$300 million, I have no idea why you think those figures are that much different.

Personally, I don't think the Mozeliak comments mean anything. Nor do I think the postponement for a day means anything. I'm sure Mozeliak WOULD like to have Pujols under a term sheet. Hell, my guess is everyone that's a Card fan would like the same thing.

If the rumors are true and they're off on both years and money, then they've got a long ways to go. And if it's true that Pujols wants 10 years GUARANTEED, then they very well may be watching the last season of him in a Cards uniform.

I was watching Pujols in the 2003 Home Run Derby last night. I have a boner for him for always. Now, with the possibility of him being a Cub, I have a boner for him for always and forever.

You have a boner for him 8 years ago or a boner for him for the next ten?

You should update this Wikipedia page with this information. Maybe somewhere under "Causes".

Has his age ever been truly verfied? Signing him to a 8-10 year deal at 31 is bad but if he is really 34 it would be that much worse.

Has your age ever truly been verified?

my performance isn't based partly on my age and unfortunately no one is considering paying me 200-300 mil over the next 8-10 years

You worried about Z, Castro, Marmol, etc.?

I hear you. There's a big difference between 31 and 34. I'd want to see some proof if possible.

I highly doubt he'd still be getting away with hiding his true age after the sweeps that were done in the wake of 9/11.

Knowing a bit about the relationship he has with the Cardinals scout that discovered him, I get the impression Albert does not feel he owes any man or team a thing. The Cardinals were the beneficiaries of one of the most team-friendly contracts ever, getting well over $100MM extra in value over the course of his current contract. Albert knows this well and has every right to demand he gets his due. He owes the Cardinals nothing and the Cardinals owe him everything.

I'm sure Albert enjoys playing in St. Louis. He has a routine there and knows the city and has made it his home. He says the right things about his team, pledges his allegiance to them, and gives them everything he has both on and off the field. That's what good teammates do. That being said, Albert's top priority is his family. He is their provider and ultimately plays for them and their futures. For his children and their children. Some naive notion of allegiance to a corporation pales in comparison to the dedication a husband and father has for his own.

To top it off, said corporation is balking at his contract proposal because they're afraid he won't be worth it in the finals years of a 10 year contract. We're talking about the best player today, the best player of his generation, and potentially the greatest player of all time who happens to play the least injury-prone position on the field. A guy who has had only two sub-1.000 OPS seasons (.955 and .997) in his 10 year career while posting 4 season of 1.100+. How absolutely insulting.

I can imagine the prospect of joining the rival of the team that spurned him and leading them to their first World Series title in over 100 years might be a little enticing, too. Hah.

Is there any substance to the speculation that his age may be different than officially recorded? Or does it all derive from jealous and petty Cubs fans attempting to tear down his character?

Pretty sure it's the latter.

He's 31. Let it go people.

A "competing" baseball executive told SI.com's Jon Heyman that he believes the Cubs will make a 10-year, $275 million offer to Albert Pujols if he hits free agency.

We don't doubt it. The Cubs have a ton of money coming off the books in the winter of 2011 and would be able to support a massive offer for the man who has done so much damage against them. But this isn't really news -- it's just speculation and hype for now. Pujols has stated a desire to cut off all talks regarding a contract extension once he arrives at spring training, but it's not like the Cardinals won't try to re-sign him throughout the summer and early fall. For now, Albert is far from available. Related: CubsSource: Jon Heyman on Twitter Feb 14, 11:20:00

Am I the only one who wouldn't give Pujols 10 years? Haven't we learned our lesson giving a lot of years to players already? As great as Pujols is I can't imagine him still being great from 37 to 42 years old. This talk of 10 years to a 32 year old is insane.

I hate it, but it's the price of poker. At least it isn't for a guy who is just an All Star and not the clear-cut best hitter in the league, and it's for a guy who has certain skills that should age better than a game based almost entirely on athleticism.

Even in his initial decline, Albert should be a very good hitter.

Plus any WS that he helps you win really helps cushion that cost.

Most Cardinals fans are opposed to 10 years because the team might not be good in 2015 and their understanding of inflation is on par with their understanding of how Matt Holliday was one of the most valuable players in the league last year.

If the Cardinals are not willing to increase payroll, they're in a very difficult position. Obviously they need Pujols really badly. But at the same time, signing him to a 30 million a year deal means they between him and Holliday they only have 50-55 million left for the other 23 players. Next year they would have 3/4 of their payroll tied up in 5 players (and that involves them dumping both Carpenter and Molina). They haven't shown enough of a commitment to their system to support that kind of philosophy.

If Pujols were coming from another team, there is no way that the Cardinals could even think about signing him to that big of a deal. With the effect on the fanbase of him leaving, it becomes much more complicated.
