When does the Vet committee pick?
They already did. "Stand Pat" Gillick was elected. The Veterans Committee now votes on a three-year cycle, and this time it was the expansion era's turn. Santo will be eligible again next time.

Ah yes, I remember The Boss got snubbed.

Blyleven and Alomar are your 2011 class.

Less than 50% for Bagwell makes me angry. He's never been implicated in anything more than playing during the steroid era.

Notable snubs:

Larkin 62.1,

Bagwell 41.7,

Jack Morris 53.5,

Lee Smith 45.3,

Raines 37.5.

McGwire 20

Palmeiro 11

I agree. If I were him I'd be pissed.

It's almost more pathetic that there was one voter for several exceedingly substandard candidates. I mean Al Leiter? Brett Boone? Benito freaking Santiago?

In the words of Jerry Seinfeld, "Who are these people?"

I want to know the two yahoos who voted for BJ Surhoff.

Hey, Benito Santiago had a trophy card! :nutkick:

Growing up though, Dave Parker was always a favorite of mine and I wish he had gotten in personally. Whether he deserves it or not, but I always thought he should have been much closer than he was towards getting in and this was his last shot on the regular ballot.

My guess is Larkin will eventually get in as he should.

Bagwell and Raines belong, but they have a lot of ground to cover.

Bagwell will be an interesting case. He's never been implicated, but then it wouldn't surprise me if was a steroid user. The dilemma for the HOF is they really can't unelect him if something were to come out about him, and so...

McGwire belongs as well, but we all know the issues there.

It's going to be interesting to see how Clemens is handled. I'm certain Sosa will get the same blackballing that McGwire is receiving.

I think all of the "convicted" steroid guys will be treated the same way by voters, even A-Rod.......

In the end, I do expect the majority of them to wind up getting in at some point though.

One of the votes was from ESPN news editor Barry Stanton.

edited to add- Stanton also voted for Tino Martinez and Don Mattingly.

I need someone to explain to me why Larkin got 38% more votes than Trammell. They had nearly identical careers.

Player A 20 years, 8288 AB, 2365 hits, 185 HR, 1003 RBI, .285/.352/.415, 66.9 WAR, 4 GG

Player B 19 years, 7937 AB, 2340 hits, 198 HR, 960 RBI, .295/.371/.444, 68.9 WAR, 3 GG

Played the same position. They even played in about the same era - 11 of their seasons overlap. One got an MVP, the other a runner up. Both were on one WS winning team.

Which is Trammell? Which is Larkin? Why is one so much better than the other?

How does Kevin Brown fall off on the first ballot? How did John Franco get more votes than he did? I don't think that he deserves to be in, but he was as good a pitcher as there was in the game from about 1996 to 2001. His career numbers compare favorably to Smoltz and Schilling, two guys you know will get a lot more consideration.

Raines and Bagwell are criminally under appreciated players.

Palmeiro at 11%. 3000 hits and 500 HRs. Clearly, the writers aren't over the whole steroid thing yet.

(A is Trammell, B is Larkin.)

I'm a fan of Trammell, and I think he has an argument to one day make the HOF. But I don't think he is as close to Larkin as you do. They have almost 50 points of OPS difference between them, which is not insubstantial. For comparison, that is about the difference between the careers of George Brett and Bill Madlock.

But then, there's a two game difference in WAR over 19 and 20 season careers in one case and a nearly 50 game difference in WAR in the other.

At least nobody voted for Lenny Harris.

So Alomar gets in even though he had unprotected sex with 2 women without disclosing that he had HIV, but McGuire gets held out based on a morality clause? That's good to know. I hate the Hall of Fame.
