NFL Week 11

The only other Panthers fan I know besides me has been on the "hire Jim Harbaugh/draft Andrew Luck" train for a while. Since Carolina is clearly going to get the #1 pick - I honestly cannot envision a scenario in which they win again - and clearly will be hunting for a coach, I wonder how realistic the idea is. Probably not at all - the owner hates making splashes - but an intriguing concept.

Are you convinced that Clausen isn't the answer or is it that you just like Luck that much as a prospect?

I agree that Luck is the best choice for a first pick if he comes out, but is he the best choice for Carolina?

I've seen a lot of mock's send Green your way.

I like Luck that much and I don't have much faith in Clausen. The success this year of Sam Bradford and Colt McCoy has made me think that if one is destined for NFL success, you'll see at least a spark of it early. (This is part of the reason I held on way too long to the Brady Quinn train - his first 1.5 games, prior to his breaking his thumb, were pretty good.) Clausen has not shown anything - his best game was either @Saints or @Bucs and neither one of them were particularly good.

I don't think there is any chance the Panthers take Luck, actually - Clausen was the first time since their first draft pick of all time (Kerry Collins) that they'd picked a QB before round 4. Green would excite me, but a receiver at #1 is another thing Carolina's front office is unlikely to do. I'm betting they pick a lineman if one presents himself. But until they do I'm holding on to that pipe dream.

My point is twofold: First, Harbaugh doesn't seem like the type of guy who'd want to share or give up power to a Jerry Jones-type of owner. Secondly, he has a good enough thing going at Stanford that he can wait a year for a better opening if his only choices are Carolina and a Dallas job he isn't interested in. Heck, he'd probably get a raise from Stanford while waiting another year to find a more suitable vacancy.

I'd be really interested in him if Fisher decides to leave Bud and Vince to each other. I wouldn't hate Gruden either since he's taken a liking to spread offenses and I think that may help Vince get back on track (since it appears he's here to stay).

He's still not at the Nick Saban level of being able to call where he goes if/when he goes pro. He's got very limited NFL coaching experience, and despite the playing experience there is a big enough cloud over college coaches in the NFL that he can't have his pick of the litter. I do think he'd be able to get something better than Carolina. However, with the CBA doom pending, most people thing coaching turnover is going to be at a minimum this year, and most jobs will be filled with the internal safe candidate, like Frazier and Garrett, if the owners can justify those hires at all. How many jobs will be out there?

Raisin's point is, if a job Harbaugh wants isn't there, he'll just stay at Stanford until he finds the right situation. He'll be in demand nearly at the Nick Saban level for colleges, I'd say.

Yes, I see that point, but I disagree with the notion that he'll have his pick of the litter. His options are going to be limited whenever he does come up. A large percentage of the NFL doesn't trust college coaches. And a lot of other organizations in constant need of a coach aren't anymore attractive than Carolina (Buffalo, Oakland, Detroit, Cincy). The guys who can pick where they go are guys who have won Super Bowls. I don't think Harbaugh can afford to be super choosy if his goal is to coach in the NFL. Although I do think he can avoid Carolina this offseason. As young as he is he might as well wait until after the CBA shakes out.

If his goal is to coach in the NFL, then yeah at some point he'll have to settle a bit. If he wins a couple BCS titles, though, I don't think he'll have to settle too much.

If he's happy staying in college indefinitely, however, and has a lot of success, he might eventually get the situation he wants. I'll agree waiting until after the CBA mess passes would be the right call.

He's not going to win a BCS title at Stanford, much less a couple.
